I wonder how long it will continue

Claudia had told her friends - Connor, Caleb, Nolan, but not Skylar, yet - about the argument as soon as she had been freed from questioning by the staff. She had kept any details to a bare minimum, revealing only that Holland Keene had bullied her about being pureblooded, and that Claudia had defended her position using a spell that would help Holland to see things from her point of view, to which they had retaliated with a series of spells that left her frozen, silent and unarmed. She had avoided giving any further details about the spell she used, or about why she might have been arguing with Holland in the first place (although Connor, at least, would surely have correctly assumed the reasoning; Caleb may also have guessed, as their acquaintanceship had begun following Claudia’s initial reaction to the same dilemma, and the seventh years in question could stand to be more discreet about the nature of their relationship).

Throughout the past three months, Claudia had felt the unintentional victim of a poorly conceived plot; it was refreshing to hear that her actions had reversed her position, if temporarily. Yet Claudia squirmed in her seat and avoided making eye contact with Danny as he enlightened her on how her spells had been experienced by their targets. She had already enjoyed pride in her magical capabilities, and vindication in defending her position, but these accolades faded in the shadow cast by Danny’s detailed explanations. Hurting them both had been intentional; she had not expected to feel badly about it.

“On you I used the Waking Nightmare hex,” she diligently answered his questions, compelled by his irascible authority and her eagerness to demonstrate her capacity to competently defend herself against those who should be her allies. “It makes you experience your worst fears.” Claudia dared to look Dardanius in the eye. She did not think the irony was lost on him, that she had been vocally compelling him to understand he was taking away everything important to her, and he had experienced the illusion of an almost identical fate. “I found it in a spellbook in the school library.” Claudia did not feel the need to mention Andrew Tennant’s notebook; this quarrel did not involve him (nor did rifling through others’ belongings paint Claudia in an especially flattering light).

“The spell I used on Holland was in a different textbook on perspective altering enchantments. It is referred to as the Walk in My Shoes spell.” She did not think she needed to explain the ensuing effects, as Danny had covered that already, but there was an aspect of the incident she wanted to make clear. “I was only hoping to get Holland to understand the benefits of our society. They seem to hate us, Danny,” she told him candidly, in case the fact had passed him by.

“I knew some of my feelings would be transferred, too, but I thought they would be about me - my concern about our family, my future, your future, how upset and confused and powerless all this makes me feel!” Her voice had become a little louder and higher over that last sentence. There were a few more people gradually trickling into the Diner now, and she did not want to draw attention to herself. Claudia took a breath and refocused. “I did not anticipate … other feelings,” she confessed, staring at her unfinished meal. “I didn’t mean to make Holland feel that way about themself.”
