‘Studying’ wasn’t the kind of answer that told Drew anything about Darlene’s hobbies, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to talk about yesterday’s Astronomy quiz. Drew didn’t know how Darlene did in school—but if she studied that much she was probably pretty smart. Drew didn’t study a lot. His grades were okay. He wasn’t, like, Dade-and-Remington smart, but if he studied he would probably do better than average in most of his classes. Well, maybe not in Potions because he worked with Kit, but the other subjects.

She brought up a better topic than studying, though. “Yeah, it is,” he agreed. “The water slides are awesome. And sometimes people do really cool stuff there. Like, last year, Marissa and Rose turned it into a beach for a party.” He was pretty sure Darlene hadn’t gone to that party, but there had been a lot of people there so maybe he just hadn’t seen her. “We should go swimming together some time,” he told Darlene.

Drew liked swimming. Actually he’d been giving Remington swimming lessons lately, because she’d said she didn’t know how and everyone should be able to swim. Drew didn’t think he was like, an amazing swimmer—he was good enough to not drown and to have fun in the water—and since he had never taken real swimming lessons himself he wasn’t totally sure how to teach it. He’d just learned how to swim by playing in the rec center pool when he was a kid (also his dad had taught him a little too), so he wasn’t great at explaining techniques. Or knowing what different techniques were called. But they usually had fun in swimming lessons and Remington was definitely getting better and more comfortable at being in the pool.

“Yeah, it was good,” he said, grinning. “I got Huburt to stop being a giant stick in the mud and play pick-up Quidditch on Saturday.” He had framed it as ‘extra Quidditch practice’ but whatever, it got Huburt out of the library. “And Madeleine wanted to hang out on Sunday, so we climbed the rock wall and stuff.” The ‘we’ included Kit but there was no way Drew was dumb enough to talk about his cousin with Darlene right now. “She got all the way to the top without help for the first time, so then we asked the house elves make banana splits to celebrate.” The house elves loved Madeleine more than they liked anyone else at RMI, Drew was pretty sure. They’d said yes and made Madeleine’s sundae with strawberry ice cream, which was her favorite, without her even having to ask. “It was really fun.”
