We gave it our best

Holland agreed that this opportunity at Cirrus would be ‘a lot’ to deal with, but they also said he could do it. Danny felt soothed by the comment: they might not approve of him taking the position, but they had faith in his competency, which was probably the more important detail, anyway. Holland knew how little effort Danny put into his classes, but hopefully they had also been able to recognize his dedication to a project once he’d taken it up, and the determination resulting from his competitive attitude. As they weren’t currently sitting there telling him this was a bad idea, or a poor choice for his future, or that he would be taking on too much, Dardanius felt yet more compelled to accept the position. Completing a degree would give him more opportunities to secure a job after graduation, but if he could have a position in the relevant field now, then why delay?

The opportunity for Danny to meet new friends was reduced, but by no means completely diminished, if he elected to work instead of study. Holland would have a great opportunity to forge new acquaintances with like-minded individuals, which, on one hand, was fantastic: Danny was excited for them. Of course, on the other hand, he realized he was a high-maintenance boyfriend for them. His whole identify essentially forbade their relationship from existing, his family were reluctant to accept Holland at best (and had magically manipulated their mind at worst), he didn’t understand a great deal about how Holland had needed to struggle for their identity - he knew details of occurrences, but not how it felt - and he didn’t know much about Muggles, either. He’d elected to continue as heir to his family rather than give that up, which meant that as long as they were together, Danny would always be part of a system that sought to exclude Holland, and even deny them their existence (as Danny had tried to do when he was younger and ignorant). He was obviously very fond of Holland, but if his circumstances proved too much for them to want to deal with then he wouldn’t try to convince them to stay in a relationship that made them unhappy. If they met someone they liked whose circumstances were comparatively easier to handle (and Danny suspected that included just about everyone), he didn’t know how he would persuade them to stay with him. Even without all that, Holland was incredibly attractive, very smart, and courageous, intuitive, and caring and witty…

“I’m going to meet people,” they said. “You’ll just have to keep me interested.”

They were teasing. He knew it, he recognized their tone and expression, and so he tried to smile, but managed only to make the corner of his mouth twitch unconvincingly. They had discussed this after the boggarts - how Danny was prepared for the potential of losing his familial and societal connections for them, and that he was content with this knowledge to take the risk anyway; how Danny really had changed from the bigoted, indefensible idiot he had been when they had first met, and that was largely down to Holland’s enlightening input and their unending patience with him, and so if Holland were to break up with him, it would not be for those reasons; how if Danny did find himself alone and with nothing after all, it would not be for lack of trying from either of them - so he was well aware that being without Holland would be far more detrimental to him than it would be to them. Perhaps that was why they could tease him about it without realizing how it was making his stomach churn. “That - um, I don’t like us joking about that,” he said, this time managing a weak smile. “Sorry,” he said, because he had brought the topic up, “let’s not do that again.”

“It would,” Holland agreed, “but you could do it.” Danny had many qualities that Holland admired; his work ethic was not one of them. Working for his grandfather’s company was a situation which could ... more

Danny didn’t laugh. Oh. Holland knew from the boggarts that they didn’t have a monopoly on insecurity in the relationship. They had their share, but they were working to address those issues. Over... more
