When Holland moved to sit near him, Danny at first felt foolish that he’d let his idle concerns become known to them. Worrying about them meeting someone else wouldn’t help: nothing that Danny did would make a difference if there was another person out there better suited for Holland. He thought they were - external circumstances aside - adequately compatible. They both had wildly different life experiences, which resulted in opposing or misaligned opinions on many, many subjects, yet both were happy to discuss and debate any given topic, and neither was so stubborn they couldn’t concede a point. Often it transpired that their core values and ideals were actually surprisingly similar, just often presented in different contexts. Dardanius and Holland had not yet, in almost seven years, been bored of each other’s company, and there was a seemingly endless list of activities in which they were content to engage together.

Of course the external circumstances could not be set aside. They would always exist, and if Holland’s type could be described as confident, athletic, and masculine-presenting (and that was all that Danny was prepared to admit he shared in common with Ruben), they would hardly be out of options wherever they went. He knew that it was pointless to be concerned about them meeting someone else, and so he was a little embarrassed to own that he harbored these concerns, regardless of their pointlessness. However, as soon as Holland was seated beside him, Danny allowed the embarrassment to pass, content that Holland had moved to comfort him the moment his expressed uneasiness. They didn’t need to apologize; he had already recovered from his temporarily surfaced insecurity, as Holland continued eating their chicken and salad.

Then Holland did that thing where they said something that made him feel like he was free falling all of a sudden. “You’ve set the bar astronomically high for anyone else I might meet.” They looked at him, he smiled, and everything was fine between them again.

Danny was prone to affectionate gestures and romantic language. He was often the instigator of any physical interactions, and he took pleasure in telling Holland how much he appreciated them. The reverse was not true: Holland was affectionate, but quietly and (usually) privately, with nothing done for show or effect. The language they selected expressed regard in terms of trust or respect, with more fanciful notions rejected in favor of concepts that, to them, were of greater importance. So when they said things that left Danny in no doubt of their high opinion of him, it had the effect of making him a little star struck. “Okay then,” he said, able to smile easily now. “I’ll try to stop worrying about that.”

Danny didn’t laugh. Oh. Holland knew from the boggarts that they didn’t have a monopoly on insecurity in the relationship. They had their share, but they were working to address those issues. Over... more
