Elliot Phippen
Best. Orientation. Ever.
Wed Jun 20, 2018 22:39

Visiting a school was not even close to the most exciting thing that had ever happened to Elliot Phippen, but since he was finally at RMI, the tour managed to hold his interest. Dressed in cargo shorts and an Aperture Science t-shirt, the eleven-year-old followed Director Garen (as his Mama called the school’s guidance counselor) along with everyone else as they walked around.

Now that they had separated from the parents, Elliot was pretty glad about it. His parents were great but Elliot would bet his allowance for this whole month that they were gonna break off from the tour and go make out somewhere they weren’t supposed to be. It just seemed like the kind of thing they would do. His dad Jimmy was a Muggle, but his mom Lia was a witch and they’d met at RMI because she and Aunt Chris (also a witch) were friends, so there were probably places in the school where they used to make out that they would definitely sneak off to before the tour was over.

Meanwhile, Elliot was apparently supposed to… make a manticore trap. They were building manticore traps on day one negative one (orientation didn’t count as the first day)! God, RMI was so much cooler than his mama had said. Lia hadn’t said much about orientation. Apparently they hadn’t had it when she was a student at RMI. “But when I was at RMI people didn’t stab each other,” she had said when he asked about it, “so I guess now we have to have orientation so we can sign a waiver that says it’s cool if you get stabbed.” Elliot agreed it would be pretty cool if he got stabbed as long as he didn’t die, and Mama laughed and said he should try not to get stabbed, but if he had to get stabbed then he should try not to get stabbed in any of his organs.

Automatically, Elliot grabbed a sharpened spike off the table (because it was the awesomest option) before he realized he didn’t know what kind of trap he should be building. Elliot knew how to use traps when he was playing a rogue in a video game, but his games were not super clear on the details of how to make them. In games with crafting systems usually you had to put in wood and some rope or fibers, but Elliot didn’t think that was going to cut it for a manticore. He also knew how to do a lying-in-wait-with-a-water-gun-full-of-Hair-Thickening-Potion trap, which wasn’t really a trap, but was super fun. Dad hadn’t even tried to get Elliot to fix it, he’d just waited for Mama to get home and then gave her a giant hug and made Wookie noises at her.

Anyway a manticore trap was definitely outside the scope of what he knew how to do. Elliot looked at one of the other new first-years who was at the trap supply table. “Are we just supposed to catch the manticores or are the traps supposed to kill the manticores?” Doing a catch-and-release thing when there were manticores loose in the school seemed like a bad idea but maybe the teachers could take them somewhere else once they were caught.

So far the worst thing about RMI, in Joey’s opinion, was that there was no ocean. There was a room with a swimming pool, however they’d barely gotten to poke around during the school tour. That... more
