Are you a doctor?

Part of the problem, Elliot realized as he thought about what the other soon-to-be-first-year said, was that he couldn’t remember which ones manticores were. Were they the lion-goat-snake ones or the man-lion-scorpion ones? Either way Elliot was pretty sure a creature couldn’t be too strong to kill. To stop the manticores they might need a lot of people and gear and planning, like doing a raid in Destiny, but even bosses had weaknesses.

Unless pipe cleaners and ping-pong balls were kryptonite for manticores, the stuff they had to work with probably wouldn’t cut it, though. Maybe instead of trapping the manticores, the school should focus on building a strike team and infiltrating their nest den lair wherever they lived. Waiting around for the manticores to hunt the staff and students sounded like a terrible plan. Professor Boot hadn’t said what the manticores would do once they caught the students but it seemed safe to assume that the answer involved mauling and/or eating.

This was a lot for day negative one.

Or maybe Boot was just screwing with them and there were no manticores. Apparently a quarter of RMI students were in a House that was about pranking so it wasn’t too hard to believe that some of the teachers would do that too. Boot seemed a little weird. He had been talking about pixies during the whole tour when Director Garen was talking about—uh, actually Elliot didn’t remember what Garen had been talking about because the pixies thing was way more interesting. Classes, probably? The counselor had said something about Magizoobotany, because then Mama had leaned over to Dad and said it sounded like RMI combined Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures into one class like they had with Charms and Transfiguration into Spellwork.

…wait. If there was a class where they studied creatures then there could totally be manticores. Maybe they should build the traps anyway, just in case. The girl who was talking to him seemed to know more about manticores than he did, which wasn’t hard because apparently Elliot didn't know anything about manticores, but still. “Oh, okay. Then traps it is. I’m Elliot,” he added. “So if they’re really strong then how do we stop them from eating us?” Boot hadn’t mentioned what would happen if the manticores caught them, but Elliot thought it was safe to assume that eating and/or mauling would be part of it.
