Leah didn’t agree with Elliot that manticores (and dangerous people) should be locked into cages, but decided to let it go. She was now almost entirely sure that Boot had been bluffing anyway, and she didn’t want to risk getting into a fight. (She didn’t handle confrontation very well.)

Star Wars… Was that the “I am your father” movie? Leah hadn’t seen it (and neither had her parents, she believed), and that made her panic immediately. She was about to lose her first potential friend just because she’d read more books than she’d watched movies. That was sad.

“Er… I don’t think so…” She needed to come up with something else to talk about to distract Elliot from her general boringness.

“I like fruit!” Leah pointed at the makeshift skewer he held in his hand. “Did you know that you can attract demiguises with it? At least that’s what some people think, because they are herbivores and fruits are the tastiest plant foods, right? Wouldn’t it be brilliant if the school had demiguises? I’d love to see one in real life! But that would be difficult of course, because they’re invisible most of the time, obviously.” She was rambling, but once she started talking about magical creatures, she found it hard to stop herself.

Blushing again upon realising how weird she must sound to Elliot, she snatched an apple from the fruit table and bit into it. Chewing was an acceptable reason not to speak, and it would give her a bit of time to think about what she should say next. Still, it was like her brain wasn’t working properly; Leah was so nervous that she couldn’t come up with a single conversation topic.

Stay calm, she told herself, you’re not doing too bad! And Elliot doesn’t look like he hates you. Or did he?

Leah snorted a laugh through her tears. “Hey, I think they’d prefer me to you!” She quickly wiped her eyes, feeling silly already. “But I’m not afraid of manticores. Dragons are much scarier, to be... more
              • Dragons sound more exciting - Elliot, Sun Jul 15 20:22
“ Hey, I think they’d prefer me to you! ” Elliot snorted a laugh too. Oh good, it worked. Sometimes people got really weird about being teased, even if you’d been getting along just fine with them... more
