Headmaster Tobias Morgan
Welcome & Welcome Back to RMI - T28 Opening Feast
Fri Jul 6, 2018 06:50
100.15.133.193

A gift basket had appeared at Headmaster Tobias Morgan’s door that morning, which he had found delightful until he opened it up and a small swathe of pixies had come pouring out.

That had been the absolute final straw.

Normally not a temperamental person, Toby had found spending the summer at RMI (aside from a relatively brief visit with Tima and Sara) to be very aggravating. The pranks that he had formerly attributed to some of the older students, despite their insistence otherwise, had continued throughout the summer. The gender-swap of the dormitory stairs the previous year - something that Toby had attributed to the unusual students, Holland Keene and Maverick Buchannan - had apparently been the foreshadowing to another problem: one morning, Toby had woken up to find his bedroom was attached to the wrong staff apartment. This had been less problematic for him to sort out than for the Hier family, for example, with their four small children and two dogs. Still, the problem had befuddled both the Spellwork professor, Aaron McKindy, and the architectural spellwork specialists that Toby had brought in to help. The staff of RMI had been forced to wait until the apartments sorted themselves out, which had taken a day and a half.

And it had kept happening! First it was the bedrooms in the staff apartments and then just a few weeks later, all of the lighting throughout the school had turned a rather ominous green colour, completely inexplicably. And a few weeks after that, the kitchens in all the staff apartments had stubbornly turned everything into pancakes. Everything - from cartons of eggs to breadcrumbs to leftovers from the night before - different varieties of pancakes.

There was only one explanation, Toby had realized after doing some research. It had to be the school poltergeist. Shifty Eyes had reacted badly to students leaving in the past and seemed to have had a strange attachment to the older Kendrick girl, so it didn’t seem too odd once he had spent some time thinking on the topic. Of course, once the poltergeist had been hunted down and questioned, it refused to admit its part in the pranks, but Tobias Morgan knew better. And with that, he had called in some specialists, who had confined Shifty Eyes to one particular part of the secret passageways. With full knowledge that many of the students knew about the passageways, Toby had asked Aaron to spell this particular bit of the spooky, winding hallways to deter any student who wandered near it. It was similar to a Muggle Repelling Charm, and Toby was certain that it was strong enough to last the entire year. Aaron McKindy was, of course, well known among the academic community for his skill in charms.

That had been two hours ago, but Tobias Morgan was now freshly showered, shaved, and wearing his good cobalt robes, walking down the hallway to the Finer Diner. He greeted a few staff members that he saw on his way, including Rob Hier who was inexplicably rolling in the opposite direction with a sneaky grin on his face. Rob was quite the creative fellow, Toby knew, and he was sure that whatever he had planned the Aquila first years would find to be quite delightful. Toby often found Rob delightful, although he did sometimes find him confusing. But the children were fantastic! Toby adored children. It had been so long since Tima was that young, and he just couldn’t help but pick the little ones up and play with them whenever he saw them. He hoped that Celia and the children would be coming to the Opening Feast.

Striding through the open lobby where the Portkeys would deliver the students in just a few moments, with the Pearl Street elevator right in the middle, Toby entered the Finer Diner. It was all ready to go: the room was lit as though it were dusk in the prairie, and on the walls were images of tall prairie grass passing by as they might have been seen out the window of a train. There were five fires: four in the House colors (seafoam green and brown for Lyra, blue and silver for Cetus, red and gold for Draco, cream and gray for Aquila) and one the standard colour for a fire on a raised dais at the front of the room. A couple of staff members were already seated around or standing by the staff fire on the dais. Above the Lyra fire hung a giant, sparkling dreamcatcher, indicating that the House had won the Inter-House Points Competition the year before.

Shortly, at exactly 6PM (Colorado mountain time, of course), Toby began hearing the noise of students arriving via Portkey in the entrance hall, and he smiled. The students would push their trunks and other belongings against the wall for the house-elves to move to the appropriate dorm rooms during the dinner. The older students started streaming in, while the first years and transfer students were being held back by the Deputy Headmaster, who was new this year. Toby thought him to be a bit shy but a jolly enough chap, very keen to start on his new job.

Everyone settled in and his Deputy led the first years and transfers in to stand against the wall by the door. Toby grinned at the group, then amplified his voice so it could be heard over the murmur of friends greeting each other after the long break and the crackling of the fires.

“Welcome welcome welcome BACK to Rocky Mountain International!” he announced, his accent clearly indicating that he had been born and raised in Wales. The hall quieted. “For those of you new students, my name is Toby and I’ll be your Headmaster!” Some older students cheered, and Toby beamed. He did love his job. “First-off, I’d like to invite our new students to take their dreamcatchers out,” there was a rustle as the gaggle of first-years pulled out the jet-black dreamcatchers that had been sent with their acceptance letters. A moment later, each dreamcatcher slowly morphed into the colour of one of the RMI Houses. “The colours your dreamcatcher have turned are the colours of the House you have been sorted into - congratulations! Please make your way to the appropriate fire.” The older students cheered again as the first years and transfers walked over to the fire that matched the colour of their dreamcatcher. “I know you’ll all make great friends this term,” Toby smiled over the students. Excellent. He did love the opening feast.

“Now for our announcements! First, let us all congratulate Russell Drew and Myfanwy Owen on being our new Head Boy and Girl!” General applause from the room as the two students came up to collect their pins. Once they had seated themselves, Toby continued. “As for our new prefects, congratulations to Skylar Kimmel, Connor Farnon, Teal Rosse, and Marley Chapman!” Although he had heard some negative things about Connor’s behavior in previous terms, Claudia Dubois’s behavior just last term and her subsequent need of assistance from the counselor had made Toby agree with the suggestion that Connor was the better of the two options.

The prefects came up to get their pins, which Toby handed over delightedly. Always a wonderous thing, to see students grow into such important school roles!

“Now let the feast begin!” the Headmaster said, without further ado. With a loud crack, dozens of house-elves appeared throughout the hall, each holding a platter of small dishes of food from all over the world. Selecting some biryani and dolmades for himself, Toby settled in for a scrumptious meal surrounded by excellent company. The opening feast: one of his favourite times of the year!

“As for our new prefects...” Marley had zoned out of Headmaster Toby’s speech a bit. That wasn’t at all because he was boring or anything like that - the exact opposite, really; he was a very lively... more
          • You'd be surprised - Dade, Wed Jul 11 15:47

              • I deliver on my promises - Dade, Thu Jul 12 18:37
“I’m not gay!” Dade said, loudly enough that one of the Lyra kids looked over in their direction. He colored and glared pointedly at the fire. He wasn’t gay. Marley was gay, but he wasn’t. Even if... more
                • Marley was quickly feeling lost-er as Dade went on. Some of the things he was saying were making sense on their own, but then they were strung together with parts that didn't make much sense at all,... more
                  • A surprise, we just went over this - Dade, Wed Jul 18 17:32
Why was Marley so frustrating? Dade shut his hazel eyes and underneath his lids, looked up at the ceiling for patience. All he was trying to do was warn her about Claudia. If nobody was going to take ... more
