She permitted Dardanius to bid her farewell, as he repeated assurances that he would visit if she wanted him to (Claudia considered that to be excessively unlikely but she was sensitive to his delicate temperament and did not outright refuse the offer, merely responding with a haughtily and silently raised eyebrow), and embraced her parents. They had both expressed concerns for her well being while she would be back at school, but Claudia honestly felt optimistic about the coming term. She had two new classes to look forward to, and regular sessions pre-arranged with the Counselor to help prevent any further emotional breakdowns. Her visits to Connor in England and her family in France had been beneficial to Claudia’s damaged self confidence, and as the dreamcatcher portkey whisked her away from the double-staircased entrance hall of her New Orleans home, she was certain that fifth year at RMI would be her best yet.

Claudia landed firmly on her feet, amidst the crowds and bonfires, and was instantly overcome with suffocating, mind-numbing terror. How had she neglected to consider that the attendees of the Opening Feast were surrounded by flames? Heat rushed to her face as a roaring sound filled her ears. She remained rooted to the spot, incapable of moving despite her every instinct screaming for her to run: a perfect statue in a Cetus blue swing dress, with curled dark blonde hair and recently manicured nails.

Moments passed. Perhaps just a few, but to Claudia it felt longer. Reality and memories were fighting for prevalence. The corridor was on fire. Dade had set the corridor on fire. Dade had been trying to set her on fire. She tried to breathe, but her chest was tight. Brown eyes darted erratically, trying to locate safety amidst the flames. A sudden tremor shivered down Claudia’s spine, startling her from her stupor. She moved quickly, with determination, bumping into other students and making no apology as she reached the edge of the room, proximal to the Cetus bonfire but a considerable distance from it. Her legs were threatening to give way beneath her, so the fifth year leaned heavily against the wall for support. She was trembling, her breath coming in hard to swallow short gasps; the students and fires that filled the room were nothing more than blurs of color as her eyes watered above flushed cheeks. Claudia hated RMI. She hated crowds, she hated bonfires, she hated conflict. She hated Dade Farnon.

More students settled as Claudia fought to regain control. She didn’t cry, her breathing slowed, but her fists were clenched so tightly she was certain her palms were bleeding. She couldn’t contemplate sitting any closer to the fire; she commanded her feet to take her forwards, but they stringently disobeyed. Luckily the flames eclipsed her from view of the majority of the student population, but it was inevitable that someone would take notice. As another person approached, Claudia defiantly raised her chin; she would not break down in public again.
