Eugene had never actually been to a school before but the movies made them seem like real grim places filled with nasty people who cared too much about what other people wore and what their parents did for living. Like Eugene hadn’t even known what Jeb’s job was until a year or so ago, so he hardly cared if his friend’s dad was a lawyer or a janitor. Anyway, despite the bleak image of RMI his older brother had painted, Eugene was finding out that school wasn’t really like the movies after all. Which was a real relief because Eugene didn’t want to find out what a swirly was, in fact, so far Eugene was having a blast at RMI. He didn’t know why Leopold was always so grumpy about going back to school. Eugene didn’t think he’d ever want to go home again. In the last few hours he had already seen more awesome stuff than in his whole entire life up to now. He felt as though he had fallen into an adventure book and had to glance at everything twice just to convince his brain that what he was seeing was real.

Huddling together with the other first years as they waited for the sorting, Eugene found himself unable to stand still, his feet kept shifting back and forth, as a nervous grin forced itself across his face. Eugene didn’t actually know much about the houses so he didn't know why he was nervous but it all seemed really important and Eugene wanted to get into a good one. His brother was in the green house, which was definitely a cooler colour than grey so he wouldn’t mind getting sorted into that one but red looked really awesome too. Oh! and blue! That one seemed good too, and didn’t it have a whale? He wondered if they kept the whale in the common room, and if that meant he wouldn’t get to see it if he was in a boring grey house. Yeah, Eugene definitely wanted to be in the blue one.

He tried to pay attention to all the grown-ups talking but every now and then something whimsical and wonderfully magic would catch his eye and he’d lose track of what was happening. It didn’t help that he was finding the headmaster a little tough to understand. He had a funny voice but that made sense. Wizards shouldn’t just sound like normal people. Eugene had to keep reminding himself that he was a wizard too because even though he knew Leopold was off to magic school all the time, he still associated the word ‘Wizard’ more with Gandalf than himself.

Eventually Eugene realised that everyone was glancing at their dreamcatchers. Was it happening? Where they actually getting sorted? Aaah!! He was so excited he nearly dropped his dream catcher, trying to rip it out of his robe pocket, not really sure what to expect he raised it up to his face and saw that it had turned a brilliant green. He was in the green house! Just like Leopold!! Green was...Lyra? Yes, that was it. He was in Lyra. He whipped his head around to find the green bonfire and searched for a familiar sour expression.

Leopold! Leopold, I got in!”

Raising the dreamcatcher above his head, he waved his arms around wildly, bouncing on the balls of his feet and yelled once more, “I’m in Lyra- like you!” Huh. Eugene mustn’t have yelled loud enough over all the chatting because he saw Leopold duck his head in the other direction. He hadn’t seen him. Still grinning Eugene charged ahead of the first years and ran toward the green flames- determined to grab his brother attention so that they could both bask in his accomplishment. Maybe Leopold could tell him all about Lyra now since they were both in it and would be hanging out all the time. It was going to be even better than having Leopold home at Christmas and over the Summer because Eugene would have him all to himself and he could teach him all of the magic spells so that Eugene could become a badass wizard but, as he approached the bonfire he noticed someone eating something strange. Momentarily forgetting all about his quest for his brother’s affection, Eugene screeched to a halt beside the stranger. “Hey, what’s that?” he asked abruptly, pointing toward the food, his dreamcatcher still grasped in his hand.
