Hopefully not with me

The summer had been quite dull, honestly. Even though his father had taken him to a variety of social events, the lack of other children in the Farnon manor had been unsettling at best. Connor had found it oddly quiet. Rose had moved out, Dade had spent the summer with Rose, and Charlene was Merlin-knew-where. Connor wouldn’t have cared, normally, but it was the first time in his life he’d ever been really alone and he’d found it unsettling. Although he was concerned about seeming improprietous, after only a few weeks Connor knew that any more time without companionship might lead him to madness, so he had written Claudia and asked her politely if she would be inclined to visit with him that summer. There was a guest bedroom far enough away from his own room that there couldn’t be any reasonable claim that they had been inappropriate with each other, as Connor had been sure to mention in his invitation. To his delight - and if he was being honest, moderate surprise - Claudia had joined him for two weeks.

She had seemed pleased enough to be around the Farnon manor, if a bit uneasy at first. Connor convinced his father to let them go to Diagon Alley unattended for a day, which had been great fun. It was nice to relax with Claudia outside of the confines of the school environment that had distressed her so the previous year.

Then Claudia had gone to Paris to visit relatives, and Connor had been alone again. Abigail, who he had grown close to the previous summer, invited him for a stay at her family’s Italian villa, but he had declined. Any other holiday plans would have paled in comparison to Claudia’s stay.

But now it was back to school, and Connor bade farewell to his father and stepmother, made sure the collar of his blue polo shirt was turned down appropriately, checked his khakis for imperceptible specks of dust, and then was whisked away with his luggage for another year at RMI.

He felt a bit ill after he Portkeyed, as he always did, so Connor took his time to recover before moving his luggage over against the wall with everyone else’s. His first year feast had been stressful, as he hadn’t had faith in the house-elves to sort his things out properly, but the fifth year knew now that they would do their duty and that his things would end up safely in his room. The first years were being held back in the entrance hall by a man that Connor didn’t recognize, but assumed to be a new staff member of some sort. Nodding politely at the man, Connor passed him by and made a start towards the Cetus fire. He didn’t see anyone he wanted to talk to on his way, which was unfortunate. Nolan was a friend of his by now, and he would have exchanged pleasantries and small talk with Caleb as well, even if he thought Caleb was a bit too friendly with Claudia.

Always preferring to sit with a good view of the dais where the Headmaster would make his beginning of term announcements, Connor moved to sit next to the bonfire on the side near the wall. He saw Claudia and didn’t even pause for breath before hurrying to her side. Connor was sure that his friend would be in the utmost distress, given the happenings of the previous term. The last time she had been surrounded by flames it had been much more dire circumstances. In fact, Connor was offended on Claudia’s behalf. How could the Headmaster allow the opening feast to proceed as such, without a thought to how Claudia might react? Connor determined to write a sternly-worded note to Headmaster Morgan. But for the moment -

“Good evening, Claudia,” Connor said, polite but warm and clearly glad to see her. “Is there anything at all I can do for you? I’m sure the bonfires are exceedingly distressing, I don’t understand what the Headmaster was thinking.”
