Leah Roth
Almost too shy for this
Fri Jul 6, 2018 17:43

Leah hadn’t been particularly surprised when her dreamcatcher had assumed the Draco colours of red and gold, but that was because she hadn’t given a single thought to which RMI house she would be sorted into. In fact, until the Headmaster (who had kindly introduced himself as Toby, which made Leah like him immediately) had brought it up, she had completely forgotten that there were different houses at all.

Now she was trying very hard to remember what her Dad had told her about Draco. She was pretty sure that creativity wasn’t at its core, but she couldn’t quite decide whether Dracos were either the particularly studious pupils or the extremely positive and empathetic ones. Regardless, the house was named after a fabulous magical creature, which convinced her that she had been sorted correctly.

Painfully aware of the stares of all the other students in the Finer Diner, Leah hesitantly made her way over to the Draco bonfire. Was she really allowed to just … sit there? With everyone else who’d been at RMI and in Draco for so much longer than she had, who’d already earned their place there? But on the other hand … where else could she sit? She was encouraged by the cheers that were suddenly erupting and by a few people flashing smiles directly at her. She was welcome here. No need to worry.

After everyone had taken their seats and Toby had made some announcements involving prefects and the like, Leah was delighted to see several house-elves appear holding trays of food. She’d never seen actual house-elves before, and quickly made a mental note to speak to some of them as soon as she got the chance.

But even though she was extremely hungry, she couldn’t eat anything. All the food looked foreign to her; she didn’t recognise a single dish. Curious as she was, she would have loved to try everything, of course, but the risk of accidentally eating meat was too big, and she didn’t want to make a fool of herself by asking if there were any vegetarian options. Too shy to talk to anyone, she stared at her feet instead, fidgeting with the hem of her school uniform.

Moments earlier, she had spotted Elliot at another bonfire. Despite being happy to see that he had found his place, she was also sad that they hadn’t ended up in the same house. It would have been nice to know someone. But maybe it would be just like at the New Student Orientation and someone would strike up a conversation with her? She would be grateful for a second friend. Gathering all her courage, she lifted her gaze and examined the group of students assembled around the Draco fire.
