Grayson Ioma
Fire fire burning bright
Fri Jul 6, 2018 21:23

Over the past week, Grayson’s outlook on his new school alternated wildly between incredibly excited and unspeakably confused. The prospect of learning about a branch of reality that was completely unknown to science had the skinny, brown-haired boy literally vibrating with excitement. But then he’d see some new and unexpected magic thing that was apparently normal in magic world, like a painting that moved and talked, and spend hours trying to learn even the simplest things and get nowhere.

Now, entering the diner and standing along one wall, Grayson brushed his hair away from his eyes and admitted that at least he’d learned that it was apparently not reasonable to expect a painting to know where it came from or what, specifically, made it alive. In retrospect he thought perhaps he should never have assumed otherwise, just because this particular one could talk.

The diner was different. It was still a train, but now it was on fire. Grayson felt a moment of panic: was this the result of some magical explosion of some kind? He knew that sort of thing could definitely happen because a year before his older brother had been seriously hurt by one (although Hunter had said it was because he wasn’t careful and Grayson found that easy to believe), and it would explain the crazy multi-colored flames. But no one was running around on fire, and in fact people were sitting around the fires which also were not blazing crazy out-of-control, so Grayson concluded this must be yet another thing that was normal in the magical world. Also one of the fires had a giant dreamcatcher floating over it. It was sparkly and doing the sort of iconic drifting-hover thing that cartoon ghosts do, which Grayson thought was very strange but at the same time made him think it was done on purpose.

With a start, the bespectacled eleven-year-old realized the other kids around him had pulled out their dreamcatchers, and few had started to head off toward various fires. He took his own out and examined it. It was gray and cream colored now. He was pretty sure it had been black before. He absent-mindedly began following one of the other kids towards one of the fires, still looking at his dreamcatcher and wondering about it.

Grayson looked up once he got close to the fire. The fire was also gray and cream colored, which he thought was an odd color for a fire, even a magical one. Was there some significance between the matching colors? He resolved to try to find out more about that later. For now, Grayson was more interested in the fire itself. Putting his dreamcatcher away again he looked at the fire more closely.

The bonfire was made of perfectly-shaped cut logs in a perfect interlocking teepee shape, which Grayson had never seen in real life and immediately made him suspicious. That the fire didn’t feel nearly as hot as he would think and that the logs didn’t look like they were being consumed by the flames had Grayson wondering if the fire was actually fire at all. Was it consuming oxygen? What would happen if he threw something into the fire? The logs didn’t seem to be burning but maybe they were just protected somehow.

Reaching into his pocket for a pen Grayson found it missing. The lanky kid was always losing small things like pens, usually without even noticing their absence. Without a pen though Grayson wasn’t sure what he could toss into the fire. The only other things he had with him were his dreamcatcher and his wand, and he didn’t want to risk either of those.

Looking around for something, Grayson blinked at the realization there were other people around. Taking a seat, he turned to the person next to him and asked, “Do you have a pen or something I could borrow?”
