Certainly not

While Claudia would usually be pleased to see Connor, she was loathe to allow him to witness her current state of weakness. He had been overwhelmingly supportive of her last term, and such agreeable company over the summer during her visit, that she felt she was asking rather too much of him to continue being the friend on whom she leaned. It would be gratifying to Claudia’s dignity if she were able to assist Connor every once in a while, rather than it continually being her indebted to him. Naturally she still felt some degree of relief that it was a friend who had approached, but her anxiety over reliance on Connor counterbalanced its effects.

“Thank you,” she managed to say, although her voice was frustratingly breathless. It was sweet that Connor expected the Headmaster would change the traditions of the Opening Feast on her behalf, but as Claudia had not herself recalled the particular circumstances of this event, nor been prepared for how they might affect her, she could forgive others for similar oversight. “You are very considerate,” Claudia added, making futile attempts to slow both her breathing and her heart rate. Soon the Headmaster would begin speaking, and it would not do for either of them to remain standing so truantly. Perhaps she could be excused from the room on grounds of ill health, but she would not permit Connor to suffer admonishment on her behalf. Perhaps… perhaps she could sit at the bonfire if he was with her. She was not completely convinced, and in fact her stomach made motions to empty itself at the notion, but what choice did she have?

“I…” she hesitated, and flushed again, this time in humiliation. She was about to ask Connor for help again, and it was excruciatingly tiresome of her, she knew. “Please forgive me, Connor, I am feeling a little light-headed,” she understanded spectacularly. “You are most certainly under no obligation to assist me, but if you could possibly walk with me to the bonfire so I can steady myself if necessary, I would be so exceedingly grateful.” Even with her uncommonly high level of dependence on him recently (she was more thankful than ever for her visit to him that summer, wherein she was considerably more like her usual self, and not the emotional, unstable person this school so frequently reduced her to), Claudia was certain that Connor would concede to help her; She was so very lucky to have him as a friend. She hoped that by holding sufficiently tightly him she might have the courage to walk towards, and sit at the fireside, and if he stayed by her then perhaps she could focus on his presence rather than the flames.
