I believe you!

Elliot took her confused answer as a no, because if your parents were such big Star Wars fans that they named you after a character, you would definitely know about it. It was hard to believe that anyone living in this century hadn’t heard of Star Wars but then again 1) not everyone was as big a nerd as Elliot’s dad and 2) wizards didn’t seem to really have movies (or TV or video games) so if her whole family was magical then maybe she wouldn’t know any pop culture stuff like that.

Before he could say anything else about Star Wars, Leah pointed at his fruit skewer and started talking about—something? He wasn’t sure what a demiguise was but he guessed that it was probably some kind of creature that was less murderous than manticores.

Update as she kept talking: demiguises were definitely some kind of creature and they could turn invisible. Out of all the possible superpowers, invisibility was not the one Elliot would want the most (super speed or flying or shapeshifting or elemental manipulation would be way cooler) but it was still pretty cool because all superpowers were pretty cool.

“Whoa,” Elliot said, “that sounds awesome.” Before orientation he had been one hundred percent sure that there weren’t random magical creatures loose in the school, but now that he was oriented his certainty had dropped down to about seventy. He still thought Boot might be screwing with them about the manticores but you never knew, and if there were manticores, then who’s to say there weren’t demiguises? Not Elliot. “You know a lot about magical animals,” he told the other incoming first year. “Do you have like, a lot of magical pets or something?”
