The portkey dropped Remington off in the Finer Diner with ease. After an activity filled summer, it was nice to return to the relative predictability of school. The Draco made it a point to emphasize the word relative when thinking about her schedule at Rocky Mountain International. Yes, she had her new class schedule - which was still subject to a change or two - and her clubs, as well as her baby project, the self-defense club. She did want to ask the Christie’s if there was any possible part time work at Lighthouse, but she really needed to figure out where in the world that would go in her schedule.

Anyway, Rocky Mountain International featured only relative predictability because the magic kept breaking and there was questionable arson. But whatever, it was still school, and Remington really liked school.

She especially looked forward to being in the same place as her friends again. Communication would certainly be easier with everyone together. She especially hoped that she could get Professor McKindy to check out the invention she’d been working on over the summer - which still needed some kind of name - and she’d almost gotten it perfect. The messages sometimes faded from the paper before the other person could read them, and other times the paper flashed harshly instead of lighting up in a nice warm glow as intended to alert someone that they had a message. She hoped he could help her make all of that a little more consistent.

Her brown eyes spotted Dade at the Cetus fire, and she smiled a little. In her pocket was one of the papers. Since she was in a different house from Dade and Drew, her closest friends at school, it seemed natural to ask them to be beta testers. The darker skinned fourth year felt excited about handing Dade his in the hopes that being at school got the Cetus past whatever weirdness had been going on. She raised her hand to wave, but as soon as her friend spotted her, he ran off.

Oh. Okay, then. Her hand fell weakly to her side and, after a moment, turned to walk to the Draco fire. She still didn’t know what she did, but Dade couldn’t avoid her forever. They had classes together and self-defense club. Plus, they shared so many friends. Eventually he’d get over whatever it was and talk to her. It was best to give him space when he needed it. However, Remington was starting to feel a bit impatient. Did he keep the pile of letters she sent to him over the summer, or did he toss them out? She understood needing space to process whatever he needed to process, but the Draco had no idea what she’d done, and that was starting to get entirely frustrating. The balls were entirely in Dade’s court. She just hoped he’d pass something her way.

Her kinky curls bounced on her way to the Draco fire, kept out of her face by a fist-sized bow. It was shaped like a huge sunflower and the stem kept the hair from her brown eyes. The yellow complimented the oversized pastel pink sweater she wore underneath her robes. She’d anticipated that she’d be sitting on the floor during the Opening Feast like years prior, so she’d opted for comfortable blue jeans and pink sneakers instead of a skirt and flats.

As soon as the Headmaster started listing the new Head Students and prefects, she felt herself sitting on the edge of her seat - erm, leaning forward more while sitting on the ground. She clapped excitedly for many of the honorees (possibly a bit less for Connor) and even let out a couple of loud cheers for Marley and Teal. That would be her next year. She’d walk up and get her prefect badge, possibly accompanied by, like, Magdalena and Raja and maybe even Dade. If there was one thing that was an absolute certainty, though, it was that her name would be called next year to receive a prefect badge. She just knew it.

Apparently she’d zoned out when imagining that amazing event, because the house elves were now delivering food to everyone and someone next to her asked her a question. Thankful that the other person couldn’t necessarily tell that she was blushing, Remington came back to reality. “Sorry, one more time. I was a tad bit distracted.”
