In what distant pencil case

”You know, when you borrow stuff, you’re supposed to give it back.”

Grayson blinked at the older kid. He wanted the pencil… back? Grayson turned back to the fire and blinked again. He was pretty sure the pencil was smoke and glitter, now. Maybe there was some magical way to restore it, but Grayson certainly didn’t know how.

In Grayson’s experience, pens and pencils didn’t so much belong to people as to the universe itself. He was always losing them, but he was also always finding them, so it all kind of just worked out. Now this pencil had returned to the universe (weirdly as smoke and glitter, but whatever), which Grayson found oddly satisfying. He had no doubt that he’d find another pencil sooner or later and could give it to the older kid, but what if he needed it back tonight? Or had some sort of emotional attachment to that particular pencil? Grayson hadn’t thought of that and mentally kicked himself for getting carried away.

“Sorry,” he said, turning back to face the older kid again. At least he didn’t seem too upset, so hopefully it hadn’t been a treasured family heirloom or something like that. “I didn’t think that all the way through, I guess. I’ll get you another one, though! Do you need it tonight? I can probably borrow another one from someone and give it to you…”

He started looking around for someone else to ask for a pencil, and instead suddenly noticed dozens of tiny wrinkly people with giant, droopy, pointed ears walking around carrying food. Grayson’s mouth dropped open as he stared. One of them passing nearby caught his gaze and offered him a bowl of noodles, which Grayson accepted with muttered thanks, continuing to stare openmouthed at the retreating figure.
