I'll be enthused for both of us

“I’ll settle for better than the last,” Leo said, and Myffi graced him with an expression that was part sympathetic, because the implication was that his last year had not been great, and part curious, because she had spent a reasonable amount of time with Leo last year, and she didn’t think it had been that awful, from her perspective. Admittedly he had been held back a year, and had been pretty upset about that, and he’d dropped out of the Quidditch team so he could study, and he didn’t seem to enjoy having to wear glasses, either, no matter how much Myffi told him that they suited him, actually… and okay that was a lot of things that maybe could have gone better.

Honestly, there were some things about Myffi’s previous term that she would prefer not to be repeated, like when Toby had thought she’d instigated that vegan meal, and she’d gotten into trouble for it, and he’d clearly been disappointed in her for something she hadn’t even done. That had sucked, but now RMI had meatless Mondays, and that was totally amazing, so actually she was pleased to have been blamed for the thing she didn’t do, because she got something good out of it after all, and so did the school, and so did the environment.

Another thing that hadn’t been so great was that after she’d kissed Marissa (and that was a fun thing that she was definitely pleased had happened), apparently Marissa and Rose had a huge fight about it, which seemed unlikely to Myffi, but Heather had told her so, and Heather didn’t usually get things wrong. Heather had then also proceeded to tell just about everyone in the school about it, and now Myffi thought maybe she didn’t like Heather so much, after all. She wasn’t going to stop speaking to her or anything, especially when they had classes together and things, but she definitely wasn’t ever going to tell her anything about her personal life ever again. People had always gossiped about Myfanwy, how she dressed differently, and ate differently, and actually cared about things most people just ignored, so she had been used to that, but being blamed for her friends falling out, and knowing that lots of other students had heard about it, too, hadn’t been so easy to ignore.

Leo broke through her musings by offering his congratulations, and assurances she would do a great job. Immediately Myffi smiled brightly again. “Thank you,” she chuckled. “I’ll certainly try my best.” She might do an okay job, because she was good at talking to the other students, and although she had never really considered herself a leader, she had managed to do okay with AgriClub, and the recycling fair last year had been reasonably successful. However there was the small matter of her secret distillery using vegetables grown organically in the plot by the greenhouses, which she was fairly confident would not be embraced as innovative or entrepreneurial if the staff were to discover it. Nor would the faculty be likely to approve of a particular ingredient in the vegan brownies she had in her trunk, ready for Myfanwy to share with specific attendees of the AgriClub harvest feast she was planning to hold in a couple of weeks. Suppressing some guilt, Myffi ate another mouthful of her delicious curry and resolved to be an exceptional role model in all other areas to make up for her tacit rule-breaking.

“So should I ask about your summer, or was it all the same as last year and we should skip the small talk?” she asked Leo with a teasing smile. “I notice you’ve brought your fan club with you this year,” she said, feigning innocence while she took a sip of water. From the relatively anti-social tendencies of her companion (although Leo seemed content to spend time with herself, Myffi was under no illusion that Leo was friendly or approachable to everyone), she expected the first year was a relative, perhaps even a younger sibling he mentioned very infrequently. “He seems so happy to be in the same House as you.”
