Let me tell you

Elliot seemed keen to talk about magical creatures, which made Leah’s face light up in excitement. It was her favourite topic in the whole world!

Unfortunately though, she didn't have any pets at home. As her family lived in a Muggle community, domesticating magical creatures was out of the question, and because her Mama was allergic to virtually all other animals, Leah had to be satisfied with going to the zoo and accompanying her Dad on work trips.

Nevertheless, she often daydreamed about what kinds of creatures and animals she would give a home in an ideal life, what she would name them, how she would accommodate them, and all the adventures they would go on together. Getting lost in her imagination came naturally to Leah, which was why she heard herself replying “Yes, loads!” to Elliot before she even realised that she had just lied to her first ever friend.

To distract herself (and Elliot) from her stupid faux-pas, she quickly added, “But most of what I know about magical creatures I learned from my Dad. He’s a magizoologist back home, you see. He’s taken me to see lots of different ones. Last summer, we visited dragons in Romania – that was the most amazing thing!” Unconsciously, her hand went to her dragon tooth talisman in her skirt pocket. She carried it around with her everywhere she went ever since her Dad had given it to her that day at the reservation.

Suddenly, she was overcome by extreme sadness. In just a few hours’ time, her family would be thousands of miles away from her, and even though they’d only just been apart for a few minutes, Leah already missed them terribly. How could she survive months without seeing them? Before she could stop herself, her eyes welled up with tears.
