I want it Now!

A brief contact with her arm alerted Claudia that Connor had returned. She opened her eyes, and needed to repeat the process because initially it had seemed to Claudia that Dade was ushering Marley over to speak to him. When Claudia reopened her eyes, a couple of students had shifted their positions sufficiently to conceal the view she had previously been afforded. Logically Claudia dismissed the scenario as very unlikely - Dade and Marley weren’t even in the same House, for starters - but she couldn’t entirely prevent her thoughts from racing to horrific conclusions, each more unlikely than the next. She pushed them resolutely to the back of her mind, either to be examined later or, more preferably, forgotten entirely. For the moment Claudia was a great deal more content to focus her attention on the Farnon seated beside her.

“Thank you,” Claudia repeated yet again, as she was increasingly grateful for Connor’s kindness towards her, “but there’s nothing that could tempt me to eat or drink just now.” She offered a weak smile. Even the thought of tea, usually such a calming beverage, was unappealing in her current state.

“Congratulations,” she offered the proper response to one who had been named prefect. “I hope I am not spoiling the occasion too odiously for you with my demand for your attention,” Claudia looked to Connor but then lowered her eyes, ashamed to be such a burden on anyone, let alone such a treasured friend. “I only hope you can still recall how better relaxed I am when not within this wretched school.” At least Connor had witnessed that she was not such a drain on him all the time; only when in heavily distressing circumstances. “I have never been so at ease as those weeks I spent with you,” Claudia admitted, a little color returning to her cheeks. It was not the first time she had felt the stir of emotions beyond friendship towards Connor, but she knew they were both too old now to revert to the sort arrangement of exclusive friendship they had once shared. She also knew that her brother was on course to disgrace himself and anyone with whom he associated, and Claudia was reticent to tarnish her dearest friend with the same damning brush.

It was infuriatingly unfair that Dardanius got to be happy (and Claudia had sufficient evidence to prove this was the case. He had talked to Holland every single day they were in Paris, and then left early to see them; she could not imagine being so eager to spend time with someone) whilst she was obligated to consider the effects of his actions on her own interpersonal relationships. It was similarly judiciously abhorrent that she was suffering myriad mental and physical reactions to such a mundane affair as a school occasion while Dade was undoubtedly reconnecting with his friends without any cares, giving not a second’s thought to the anguish he had caused. Yet dwelling on either of these lamentable circumstances would bring Claudia no profit. Neither, for that matter, would remaining here. “Would you forgive me if I retired to Cetus?” Claudia asked Connor. She had not abandoned her suspicion that Dade might ambush her whenever she was alone in the corridor, but she did believe she would be more prepared for it now, were that to happen. She refused to be fearful of him.

  • “Not very much of her, no,” Connor responded. “My stepmother went on holiday for a bit as well, so the manor was rather quiet.” Had Connor not already been escorting Claudia to a seat, he would have... more
