Hey, I think they’d prefer me to you!

Elliot snorted a laugh too. Oh good, it worked. Sometimes people got really weird about being teased, even if you’d been getting along just fine with them before. Elliot didn’t get it. His whole family totally made fun of people in an affectionate way (if they were deliberately avoiding teasing, it meant something was up), but apparently not everyone thought “dumbass” could be used as a term of endearment. It wasn’t always one, but if it was applied to his Uncle Logan, or Uncle Hayden, or… actually pretty much any of his uncles… then it was meant fondly.

If Leah was more afraid of dragons than of manticores then Elliot figured manticores probably weren’t that bad. He still didn’t know what a manticore looked like, but he knew dragons’ weak points (the eyes and the belly), so if a manticore was less scary then it probably had some weaknesses you could use to defend yourself against it too.

He was still trying to remember what a manticore was so he could guess their weaknesses when Leah changed the subject back to why she’d been upset. He could see why she would be, especially since it’d probably be hard for her to write to her family. Like, could you even send something to Switzerland by owl? He didn’t think so. Elliot shrugged. “Not too scared?” he hazarded, emphasis on the second word. He’d never been away from home for a long time before (except once when his parents went on a trip together and left him and Ari with their paternal grandparents for two weeks, but that didn’t count because they were with Grandma and Grandpa Phippen at their house) so he’d never really gotten homesick. “I mean, I know I’m gonna miss being at home and my family and stuff.” Being close with both of his parents, Elliot figured he would definitely miss them, and he would for sure miss being able to play video games and go online.

Right now he thought he wouldn’t miss Ariana that much, because she kept saying she was going to go into his room and use his stuff while he was gone at RMI. Obviously he couldn’t take everything he owned to school with him, and he didn’t know any spells he could use to protect his stuff yet, so he would probably just have to deal with the fact that she was gonna mess with his things. But on the other hand he usually got along with her pretty well. Ari was five years younger than Elliot was, so they were just kinda at different places, which meant there wasn’t a lot for them to connect over but also that there wasn’t a lot for them to fight about. They liked different games (Elliot went for survival horror and MMOs; Ari liked RPGs and simulation-type games and was really into this game where you were Barbie running a horse stable right now) but they still played together sometimes, and she could be a pretty funny kid when she wasn’t being a brat. Okay, maybe he would miss her.

Then again, things were a little different for Elliot because two of his best friends were coming to RMI with him. “But my friends Tycho Leppit and Sadie Embers are coming to RMI too so, like, I know I’m not totally on my own.” Sadie wasn’t here at orientation today, which was a little weird, but whatever, she was definitely coming on September 1st.

Leah snorted a laugh through her tears. “Hey, I think they’d prefer me to you!” She quickly wiped her eyes, feeling silly already. “But I’m not afraid of manticores. Dragons are much scarier, to be... more
