Keith praised computers, and Jesse nodded in fervent agreement. His family did not own a single computer between them, because his parents did not have a lot of money, and insisted - much like Keith’s Dad - that they did not need one. Jesse’s Dad did have a smart phone though, because it was from his work, but he also used it for personal contacts. Some students at Jesse’s Muggle school, which he attended before RMI, had thought his Mom was strange for not having her own phone, but as Jesse didn’t have many friends, it had been easy to not make a big deal. It had made homework assignments harder sometimes, because if their teachers wanted work to be typed, or the class to research on the internet, Jesse had needed to use the school computers. His classmates already called him a nerd, so it hadn’t made any difference to their impressions of him, but Jesse would rather have spent less time at school, and more time at home where he could be left alone.

It was unusual that Keith’s mother did not even know about magic. Now it made sense for Keith to have spent the summer with his father. Jesse wondered if he would have to keep hiding magic from his sister as she got older, too. He imagined that would be difficult. At least they could still play with dinosaurs.

“I like reading, too,” Jesse said, although considering that was just about the only activity he’d done in their dormitory last year aside from sleeping, Keith had probably noticed that already. “Some fantasy books,” he said, because that was the genre his roomate had mentioned, “some science fiction, lots of fact and general knowledge books, too.” Sometimes reality was even stranger than fiction, like the pacific barreleye fish, which can rotate its eyes to look upwards through its transparent head. “I like comic books,” Jesse said, so enthusiastic now that he had forgotten his food, although his voice remained calm, his interest conveyed through expressive eyebrow movements. “There isn’t a comic book store in my hometown but I found some in the library. Sometimes my grandparents send them to me.”

It was sounding like Keith had a lot of the same hobbies as Jesse. There were also both on the Draco Quidditch team, although Jesse was Beater and Keith was Keeper, and those two positions didn’t do much interacting with each other. “What are Gundam models?” Jesse asked, remembering his food again and finishing off the last of his fries. “I built a twelfth-scale fighter jet model with my Dad once, that was fun. I’d build more models,” he said, eagerly. He had enjoyed finding the pieces and following instructions and seeing the finished product slowly coming together. “I also like puzzle books, and strategy games. Do you play wizards’ chess?”

Keith knew a lot more about comic books than Jesse did. His Dad took him to a comic book shop every weeks, and he was going to receive them by mail while he was at school, and he knew there was a... more
