“Ha, yes,” Georgina said through her food, “I’m going to be an animagus. Even if I’m something ridiculous.” She looked Kaye right in the eye as she said, “My Dad is a duck-billed platypus.” If that wasn’t the most pointless animagus form imaginable then Gigi would do a dance on the staff dias. “That really tells you all you needs to know about him,” she rolled her eyes and shook her head affectionately. “Mum’s a honey badger. And ditto.” Her mum would fight anyone, anywhere, over anything. Gigi’s school teachers, the post office clerk, the ironing board, whatever.

She knew the name McKindy, but only as someone who was also an animagus, who had been a Quidditch coach and a librarian while her Dad taught at RMI, so this apellwork professor was probably someone different. Or maybe her Dad had remembered incorrectly, which was honestly more likely. Since he had known Gigi would be coming to the school at which he’d taught for fifteen years, he had been more prolific in sharing anecdotes, but more often than not would forget the end, or the beginning, or some other salient detail that rendered his story incomprehensible. Honestly being so far away from them for a while was going to be refreshing. Her folks were great, but kind of overbearing.

Kaye laughed at Gigi’s query about extracurriculars, and the first year felt reassured. Clubs could be interesting, depending on the sort. She wouldn’t be interested in something dull like chess club but surely a magic school would have something enticing to offer. Secret passageways definitely sounded appealing, and Georgina started to smile a little at the prospect. Parties could also be entirely lame or very cool, depends on who was throwing them and for what reason; Gigi’s smile stretched to a grin. “Mild arson,” Kaye continued. “Light stabbings.” Gigi laughed; Kaye was clearly messing with her. She didn’t hold it against the older girl. When she was Kate’s age (whatever that was), Gigi would definitely mess with the new first years.

“I’ll keep an eye out for arsonists bearing knives,” she snickered. “Lemme guess, the Headmaster is really a werewolf and the Quidditch pitch is haunted too, am I right?” With another chuckle, Gigi picked up her cream cake and took another large bite.

Ah, so she did come from magic. That was neat. Kaye sometimes wondered what that would be like. She really enjoyed having both Muggle and magical influences in her life, though. She was supposed to... more
