”What was that all about?”

Grayson blinked at the older kid, then looked at the fire and blinked, then looked back to the older kid and blinked again.

He wasn’t at all sure how to answer that question. He wanted to say that since the fire was obviously magical he wanted to know what-if-anything it had in common with normal fire and that since the wood wasn’t burning he had guessed that it was just pretty decorative light and didn’t burn anything but you can’t go around sticking your hand in fire so he used the pencil to test his hypothesis and that the result was really interesting because the pencil certainly didn’t burn the way it would in a normal fire but something definitely did happen to it and it kinda sorta looked like burning but also kinda not so he had no idea what it was that actually happened to the pencil and now he needed to come up with a way to figure that out and also now he knew that the wood itself had something possibly magic about it that made it so whatever happened to the pencil didn’t happen to it and he had no idea what that was either so really the pencil experiment had raised more questions than answers which was really really super cool and awesome!

But Grayson had discovered that people tended to look at him funny when he said stuff like that, and if he said he did it for science maybe the older kid would think he was some sort of evil scientist villain guy who did evil experiments all the time. He didn’t want to get a reputation as an evil heirloom-destroying villain guy on his very first day.

“I was… curious?” Was what Grayson finally went with. Then winced because that was still pretty much the same thing as “for science!” He continued on hurriedly, “But I really didn’t think anything was going to happen to it! The wood isn’t burning up or anything so I figured probably the pencil would be fine too I just wanted to see for sure!”

The new Aquila seemed real confused about why Nolan would want the pencil he’d loaned him back. And honestly, getting the pencil back didn’t matter—like, Nolan probably would’ve forgotten all about... more
