An Ural Owl

A deep wo-hooo came echoing out of the ducts. If any of the diners below were paying attention, they surely would have heard it. If any weren't, they would surely notice what happened moments after, when there was a streak of white-and-brown and a large ural owl dropped from the ceiling. It barrelled right through a cluster of unfortunate younger years, clipping one of them with a broad wing as it quickly turned up again to glide over the dining hall, and circled twice before plummeting back down.

Landing heavily on the table in front of Kaye Packman, the ural glared at her with big dark eyes and wo-hooo'd once more, right in her face, before releasing the envelope in its left talon. As soon as the envelope had been claimed, the owl seemed to lose all interest and hopped a couple steps over. It had been a long flight to the United States, and the owl began to investigate her plate for possible snacks.

Once opened, mariachi music started playing along with a puff of confetti. But that wasn't the point of the envelope. Just an added bonus.

The first actual thing in the envelope was a letter. It wasn't written in English, obviously, because that wasn't safe. It also wasn't written in Swedish, Russian, or any other language that either the writer or recipient might have understood. Fortunately there was a runic inscription along the top that, when touched by the right person, i.e. Kaye, caused the letters to reassemble and spell out a message.

Hej käraste-Kaye, it has been sooo many days and I am sure you are very bored without me. So here is a fun thing to carry you over! You are welcome! (Don't worry, it was with one of those trypod things.)
Have a happy day and the best of luck to you in corrupting all of the firsties. Lunch on P.S. soon? -Ruben

That led to the second actual thing in the envelope, which was a simple black Ikea frame with a blank picture inside. Or at least, it started off blank - and then a magicked image of a grinning Ruben sauntered over and immediately pulled off his jacket, and then continued casually stripping in time with the mariachi music, various clothing articles piling up along the frame. His long hair was loose with flowers braided along the scalp. A particularly large, red peony blossom conveniently fell loose before things could get too M-rated and, rolling his eyes, the two-dimensional Ruben gathered up his clothes and sauntered out.

Wo-hooo. If she didn't appreciate it, too bad. The ural had no intention of flying back overseas today, or tomorrow, or possibly even next week.

Kaye really liked the idea of falling into this bizarre friend group. Leo, Myffi, and Nolan weren’t exactly something that made sense, but it didn’t feel wrong. They all meshed together in their own... more
