Keith knew a lot more about comic books than Jesse did. His Dad took him to a comic book shop every weeks, and he was going to receive them by mail while he was at school, and he knew there was a comic book shop on Pearl Street, where both boys would be able to visit next year. Keith even offered to share his new books with Jesse when they arrived. “That’s a very generous offer,” he said, sounding a little surprised. None of the Keller children shared brand new toys with each other. It was like an unwritten rule, that new toys weren’t for sharing (unless it was a board game or something else that necessitated sharing) for at least the first few days of receipt. Yet Keith was willing to share his comic books with Jesse. “I would be very pleased to share your comic books,” he said, and he sounded pleased, too.

Keith explained Gundam models to Jesse, and they sounded fun, too. It seemed that his companion shared his enthusiasm. “It is awesome,” Jesse nodded fervently. “Your Gundam models sound awesome, too.” He didn’t have any models of his own to make just now, but maybe he could ask for one for Christmas, and bring it back to school, and he and Keith could make and paint their models together.

“I don’t have my own set,” Jesse shook his head to accompany his answer to Keith’s question, “but there is a set in the Draco commons.” It was a bit old and battered but presumably wouldn’t have allegiance to either of them like a personal set would, so perhaps it would be less biased. “We should play it sometime. We could play it tonight, if you want.” Keith might not want to play tonight and that would be okay, because they had six years together left to play chess, but Jesse was content to start almost immediately. They would be going back to their commons soon, Jesse thought. He had already finished his chili and fries, so he quickly grabbed a bowl of pudding from a passing elf before there was none left. Then, learning from his earlier mistake, he grabbed a second bowl for Keith. Tasting his own pudding, Jesse said, “It’s fruity flavored.”

Keith smiled when Jesse nodded in agreement about his comments on computers. He had wanted his own for a while, but Dad thought they were useless, and Mom had a computer for the whole family but... more
