That would be weird

Of the people that could have been seated at the table with Connor, Nolan was a good option. The other pureblood was, in fact, his second preference for people to talk to - Claudia being the first, obviously. Connor supposed he wouldn’t have overly minded Caleb either, but something about the other boy made Connor very antsy, especially when it came to Caleb’s relationship with Claudia. Claudia was free to do as she wished and have the friends she wished to have, clearly, but Connor didn’t fully trust Caleb’s intentions with his friend, not to mention that with his Quidditch skills, Connor suspected that Caleb could get on well with pretty much any girl in the school. Nolan, on the other hand, was a well-mannered young man that Connor got along fairly well with, and one that he was not concerned with when it came to Claudia’s well-being.

He did feel a bit uncomfortable at having read a piece of Nolan’s private correspondence, but as Nolan didn’t seem to mind overly much, Connor supposed his mind ought to be more at ease. Nolan was very easy-going and mostly enjoyed speaking about his horse, who was named Quint. From their conversations thus far in the year, Connor knew that Quint was being boarded nearby, and had expressed interest in meeting the animal. While Connor thought that smaller animals (dogs, cats, rodents) were unclean and had no place inside the home, he rather liked larger animals that stayed in the outdoors where they belonged and cleaned themselves through methods that did not involve their own tongues. He understood that animals had different sensibilities than people, but that was still just gross.

Apparently Nolan’s letter was about ‘betrothal stuff’ which made Connor a little bit jealous. Although his branch of the Farnon family was not the main branch and therefore (theoretically) less focused on social standing, Connor was still hoping to have a betrothal arranged for him. The only girls he really knew were Claudia (whose family was much too important for the Farnons to arrange an agreement with) and Marley (who, while much less heinous than years before, was still generally inferior). He had spent some time with Abigail over the past two summers, but often found her company lacking when he thought about her in comparison to Claudia. Still, he knew that his father was always making connections in the business world and could hold out hope that a betrothal would come out of some of those connections. Still, he was only fifteen and it was still slightly early for that sort of thing, in his personal opinion.

“Not seriously,” Connor said, fudging the truth a little as he looked up from his plate of eggs at Nolan. “There are some families my father does business with that might have interesting candidates, but as they are all slightly younger than me it is a bit early for that sort of conversation.” There were some families that chose to begin betrothals early, but they were typically families of higher consequence. Connor knew that his mother’s relationship had been a betrothal, and that had seemingly worked out quite well. Or - Connor considered his siblings briefly - they had at least one moment of success, despite the other two hellions. “It is unlikely that my siblings will comply with a betrothal arrangement, unfortunately,” or fortunately, because who wanted Rose to be the representative of their family? Connor nearly winced at the thought. “So my father really just has to worry about me. Are you excited about your prospects?”
