It is yours, after all

American geography was not Connor’s strong suit, so while he pretended to know exactly where Missouri was when Nolan mentioned it, he actually had little to no idea. He didn’t really understand where Nolan was from, except that there was a panhandle involved (Connor was pretty sure about that one, anyway) and that Nolan spoke differently than other Americans Connor had come across. Americans had some sort of hangup between the north of the country and the south of the country, and what attention he had paid in Cultural Studies led him to recollect that there might have been a war about something in between there, but honestly he couldn’t keep his own country’s wars straight, so why should he be expected to bother with America’s?

It seemed as though Nolan had a girl he liked being considered in the process, though, which Connor imagined must be a nice situation. Obviously if he liked the person he was betrothed to that was all the more reason to go through with it, but Connor had a realistic expectation of what betrothals actually were. Purebloods entered into betrothals for political reasons, and if a man wanted to have a relationship outside of that, well - that was what other girls were for. Girls like Marley, Connor supposed; that was where she fell into this entire equation. Knowing where everyone fell on the society spectrum made Connor feel much better.

Of course, then Nolan said something about finding a girl at RMI that fit his family’s criteria for a betrothal and Connor froze up a little bit. Claudia would be the perfect fit for someone like Nolan. Her family was important enough that it would be a good business arrangement, and Claudia even liked Nolan. Nolan wasn’t as close to her as Connor was, but he was a much better political arrangement. On the one hand, Connor trusted Nolan more than Caleb - Nolan was kind of an earthy guy who seemed to have his priorities straight and didn’t beat around the bush that often. On the other hand, Claudia was a person who very much liked to left things unsaid for the sake of polite society. Nolan mostly counted as polite society because of his family. Connor was willing to overlook certain things - such as Nolan’s physical problem - because of Nolan’s family. Perhaps when it came to looking for a match for their daughter, the Dubois family would not be so forgiving, however.

Then again, they seemed perfectly willing to have their heir run around with someone like Holland of all people, so clearly ‘discerning’ was not a trait Claudia came by genetically.

“There aren’t very many suitable options here,” Connor suggested, hoping to draw Nolan’s attention away from Claudia. “I’m sure that there are superior choices in the uh where you live. Most of my options are attending Hogwarts, obviously, although some did elect to go to Beauxbatons instead.” Hogwarts was the most common option, but there was something of a status element when it came to attending Beauxbatons, which was a majority-French school. Beauxbatons was where Abigail went, Connor was fairly certain. They hadn’t spoken of school, much, given that they had met the summer after the debacle with Andrew.

  • If you don’t want it, I’ll take it - Nolan, Thu Jul 26 12:13
Nolan nodded agreement and understanding. It was early, especially when wizards easily lived to be a hundred or older. Sixteen was actually young for his family to seriously think about marriages... more

“ There aren’t very many suitable options here, ” Connor asserted. Seemed a mighty strange thing to say. Besides Alena there was Claudia, and Darlene Knight (okay, so Nolan did know one prominent... more

Ugh it seemed like Nolan was fixated on Claudia, and that made Connor very uncomfortable. Obviously his friendship with Claudia was no longer exclusive - and it was Connor’s own fault - but he still... more

Connor had a point: their group of mutual friends (Nolan considered this to include himself, Connor, Claudia, and Caleb) was small, and the guy to girl ratio was three to one. Unlike Nolan—who was... more
