Nolan
Sounds like a selfish answer

Connor had a point: their group of mutual friends (Nolan considered this to include himself, Connor, Claudia, and Caleb) was small, and the guy to girl ratio was three to one. Unlike Nolan—who was friends with Myffi because they both liked the outdoors, and spent time with Alena, and enjoyed Kaye’s antagonistic company in what he assumed passed for friendship with her, and even got along all right with Marley, not that he advertized this to Connor and Claudia—Connor didn’t seem to have strong friendships outside their quartet, let along female friendships.

Of the three girls Nolan considered friends besides Claudia and Magdalena—well, it was difficult to compare. Myffi and Marley had their quirks. Nolan put that down to cultural differences. Not because of the differences between Wales or Canada and America, but because Myffi was from the kind of family that lived on a commune, and (to his understanding) Marley didn’t always have a fixed address, so Nolan took that to mean there was some sort of poverty issue it’d be rude to ask about. And Kaye was so far beyond any girl Nolan had ever met that Nolan didn’t quite count her in the same category. She was obviously a girl, but not the same way the others were. She was funnier, he guessed.

In any case, none of the three were the kind of girl Connor and Nolan were talking about. “I find Kateri’s penchant to gossip to be unfortunate,” Nolan nodded to show he agreed, but shrugged at the same time to show it wasn’t a big deal. Kateri liked to talk, but she was no Heather—in other words, harmless—and something he could overlook, if he was considering. Her sister Alice, who Connor hadn’t mentioned, was quieter, but she seemed inept at magic, which counted against her. Nolan judged himself as average at spellcasting (adept with things like Summoners and cleaning charms, which he used most frequently), but if you were selecting for traits, he and Alice weren’t the best bet for strong magic.

He noticed that Connor hadn’t identified any faults in Claudia. That was… well, something. Poor Caleb.

And I couldn’t possibly pursue any sort of arrangement with someone like Magdalena, who my closest friend has taken under her wing.

Huh. Now, that hadn’t occurred to Nolan, He considered Connor’s words, wincing a little because his leg chose the moment to painfully demand attention again. He rolled his left ankle—a motion made possible by the spells on the prosthetic—and imagined curling and relaxing his toes, which he couldn’t do. Merlin-damned phantom limb. Not quite better, but it’d do.

“You think that’d bother Claudia?” he asked, recovering. He knew that Alena and Claudia were friends, but so long as they weren’t enemies he didn’t see why their relationship would make a lick of difference to how she would feel about Nolan’s interest in the younger girl. The Ceti were real close, though, or at least Connor knew Claudia better than Nolan did. If he thought she would have a problem with a friend establishing some kind of arrangement with Alena… well, it wouldn’t change much for Nolan, but he might mention his intentions to Claudia first. That way it at least wouldn’t be a surprise for her. “Guess I oughta tell her before sayin’ anything to Alena, then.”

  • Not always true - Connor, Fri Jul 27 06:18
Ugh it seemed like Nolan was fixated on Claudia, and that made Connor very uncomfortable. Obviously his friendship with Claudia was no longer exclusive - and it was Connor’s own fault - but he still... more

It seemed like Nolan wasn’t too preoccupied by Kateri’s gossiping, which was fair because Connor wasn’t either. Given how quickly the news of his fight with Andrew had spread, he just had a healthy... more
        • Excuse you, I’m clean - Nolan, Tue Jul 31 18:03
Nolan wasn’t quite sure what Connor was referencing. From where he was standing, this term couldn’t be worse for Claudia than her fourth year had been. She wasn’t in double detention anymore, for... more

There was a pleasant silence, during which both Nolan and Connor focused on their breakfast. One reason that Connor liked Nolan was that he was not the sort of person with whom silence was awkward.... more

Nolan snorted at the unnecessary explanation. Yeah, Nolan wouldn’t be surprised if everyone from Professor Boot to the first-years knew that Connor and Claudia were “quite close.” But then Connor... more
