I don't want your germs!

It seemed like Nolan wasn’t too preoccupied by Kateri’s gossiping, which was fair because Connor wasn’t either. Given how quickly the news of his fight with Andrew had spread, he just had a healthy wariness of people who talked a little too much about business that wasn’t theirs. Nolan didn’t seem like the sort of person who was much preoccupied at all about what other people felt, a trait that Connor was almost jealous of. Not entirely, because Connor felt that polite behavior was not behavior that was gossiped about, but given his history and given that it was just a matter of time before Marley became an issue once more, the English boy knew that he needed to keep as much control as possible of his personal business. Kateri was just too much of a liability for Connor at the moment, even if she wouldn’t be for Nolan.

But it seemed as though that was all beside the point: Nolan was not interested in Claudia or Kateri, but rather Magdalena Adler! Connor didn’t quite breathe a sigh of relief, but he felt as though he could have. Of course, if Claudia was interested in Nolan in that sort of way he would support her, but as far as he was aware Claudia did not feel that way about Nolan and Connor was loathe to encourage an interest that had not sprung up organically. Besides, however well-off Nolan’s family was and however much Connor did like Nolan, he was positive that Claudia could do better than their friend - with someone who had managed to keep track of all his limbs, perhaps. He wasn’t sure how Nolan had lost his leg, but Connor believed it was logical to imagine it had involved Nolan being careless. After all, people tended to keep their limbs as a general rule.

“I do not believe Claudia would be unduly distressed if you pursued an agreement with Magdalena,” Connor said carefully, trying not to backtrack too hard. “Although it might be polite to inform her of your intentions in advance. She is absolutely not in need of additional distress this term.” He didn’t imagine that Claudia would actually be distressed if Nolan were to make advances on Magdalena, but he also couldn’t imagine that she would be upset by knowing in advance. Connor was glad he knew about Nolan’s intentions, given that Magdalena was not someone the Cetus knew very well at all. If it were possible that she were to begin spending time with the group - as would be reasonable if she were to take Nolan’s advances positively - it would do Connor well to know a bit about her beforehand. Sometimes Connor wished he had an actual sister instead of Rose. A real girl, the sort who befriended other pureblood girls. It would be handy.

Delicately, Connor lifted a forkful of eggs to his mouth and chewed politely. It was so pleasant to have someone close to him in age who understood the responsibilities of an heir.

Connor had a point: their group of mutual friends (Nolan considered this to include himself, Connor, Claudia, and Caleb) was small, and the guy to girl ratio was three to one. Unlike Nolan—who was... more

There was a pleasant silence, during which both Nolan and Connor focused on their breakfast. One reason that Connor liked Nolan was that he was not the sort of person with whom silence was awkward.... more

Nolan snorted at the unnecessary explanation. Yeah, Nolan wouldn’t be surprised if everyone from Professor Boot to the first-years knew that Connor and Claudia were “quite close.” But then Connor... more
