Nolan wasn’t quite sure what Connor was referencing. From where he was standing, this term couldn’t be worse for Claudia than her fourth year had been. She wasn’t in double detention anymore, for starters (Nolan couldn’t think of a better way to dissuade people from hexing each other than by giving someone with a lily-white record double detention for the whole semester over one little spell. Dade Farnon might not have gotten the message, but everyone else sure had), and her brother and his courtesan weren’t at RMI any more, so surely this wasn’t a distressful term for Claudia already. He also couldn’t see why his asking Alena to court would be distressing to Claudia at all.

Still, he might mention it to Claudia anyway. Not because he was seeking permission—he was interested in courting Alena and he’d do something about that with or without Claudia’s blessing—but because she might be able to help. If Claudia knew whether Alena would be interested or what expectations the younger girl had, Nolan wouldn’t mind hearing it. There were plenty of girls Nolan wouldn’t mind marrying, but only one who he was considering pursuing an arrangement with.

Claudia herself was on the former list. Them being only a few states away from each other—you couldn’t get from his part of Oklahoma to her part of Louisiana without stopping even if you flew one of the horses bred for endurance flights, but it was still only a few hundred miles—meant their circles overlapped, even if they weren’t the same. He certainly liked her as much as he liked Eppie Hewitt, if not more. And she was from a good family, although Nolan thought the Ramseys had enough scandal for one union without whatever the situation with her brother would end up coming to.

“If you say so,” he said, laconically. He scraped some scrambled eggs onto his toast and took another bite. Mmmm. Yeah, he definitely needed a house elf to cook his meals after he got out of RMI. He and Connor ate in silence for a little while. “So Kateri’s unfortunately gossipy,” Nolan eventually said, after washing down some bacon with milk, “and Alena’s too close to Claudia for you. Fair enough. I notice you didn’t find any reasons not to be interested in Claudia.”

  • I don't want your germs! - Connor, Sat Jul 28 11:24
It seemed like Nolan wasn’t too preoccupied by Kateri’s gossiping, which was fair because Connor wasn’t either. Given how quickly the news of his fight with Andrew had spread, he just had a healthy... more
    • Excuse you, I’m clean - Nolan, Tue Jul 31 18:03
      • Have some hand sanitizer just in case - Connor, Wed Aug 1 13:54
There was a pleasant silence, during which both Nolan and Connor focused on their breakfast. One reason that Connor liked Nolan was that he was not the sort of person with whom silence was awkward.... more
        • Hard pass - Nolan, Sun Aug 5 23:36
Nolan snorted at the unnecessary explanation. Yeah, Nolan wouldn’t be surprised if everyone from Professor Boot to the first-years knew that Connor and Claudia were “quite close.” But then Connor... more
