“So what have you been doing to keep yourself entertained around here?” Kaye asked. Myfanwy tried not to look too surprised as she started eating her breakfast; she had never been friends with Kaye, but she didn’t dislike her - she supposed they had tolerated each other because of Ruben. Both girls had friends in the year group that had just graduated, but Kaye had a boyfriend amongst them - she assumed from the strip-o-gram that the couple were still together - so that had to be hard. Maybe Kaye was having trouble filling the hours without her co-conspirator.

Shrugging, Myffi replied, “Same as usual, really. I work at the organic food store on Pearl Street.” Did Kaye know that? Maybe. Myffi wasn’t sure if it had come up on conversation before. “I’m looking after the allotment most days, running AgriClub,” she carried on in her Welsh accent, “and this year I asked Susan if I could do like an environmental piece in Rocky Voices.” Susan was her friend and the newspaper’s editor, and there was currently nothing else like that available. Being forced to think about her future - as all the seventh years were - Myfanwy thought journalistic campaigns might appeal, but she’d never tried; the school paper seemed like an unmissable opportunity before graduation. “So there’s that, too.”

There was also Leo. That was an unexpected development, but totally welcome. She didn’t think she was imagining that he was less grumpy these days, and they weren’t actually dating, but they had tried a couple of activities that could probably count as dates if they wanted them to. Myfanwy was content not to label anything. If she was happy and Leo was happy then why bother finding a name for it? She didn’t necessarily want to talk about Leo with Kaye, though; she wasn’t friends with the other seventh year. Myffi definitely wasn’t talking to Heather about him though, not since she’d spread all those rumours about Myffi and Marissa. Okay so they were true, but that was her business, and Marissa’s, and not Heather’s. It wasn’t right to go around talking about people like that.

“I’m also keeping up the,” she kept her voice low, “alcohol project that Ruben started.” Kaye hadn’t told anyone about that yet, as far as Myffi knew. She supposed it couldn’t hurt to make sure that was still her intention. “You’re… totally going to keep that between the two of us, right?” Myfanwy asked, with a hopeful smile.
