I call that selfish

Myffi breathed a sigh of relief as Kaye confirmed that she wasn’t going to tattle about the distillery. It probably had more to do with Ruben than any sort of alignment with Myffi (or maybe her fellow seventh year was just an anarchist, and would side with the student creating alcohol on school premises over the staff, no matter who was involved) but the Lyra didn’t really care about the reasoning. She didn’t like to disappoint people, and she imagined Toby would be disappointed in her if he found out, which would suck if she needed to get like a reference or something for whatever she decided to do with herself after graduation. So she was pleased that Kaye was going to keep her secret, and in an effort to keep the Aquila on her side, Myffi was prepared to answer her questions about who else knew. She nodded her head to affirm that it was just the two of them, and had opened her mouth to detail that she had considered telling Leo about it, but she hadn’t made up her mind yet, and then Kaye said, “Or is there a secret RMI society of illicit substances I’m about to join? Agriculture Club is a fantastic front.”

Myffi closed her mouth. Kaye could have been making a throwaway comment, but as she said ‘substances’ plural, and she mentioned AgriClub, it seemed a reasonable conclusion to draw that the other illicit substance Myfanwy had been ingesting on school grounds was not so secret as she’d believed until now.

“Nolan told you about the hash brownies,” she surmised. It was probably okay. She hadn’t asked Nolan not to tell anyone, although honestly she really thought that was implied, considering she was obviously going to be implicated if the wrong people found out, and as Head Girl she really ought to be setting a better example, but she didn’t think Nolan was a snitch. He was around Kaye quite a lot, so Myfanwy had assumed they were friends, and it was totally okay for friends to tell each other things, so long as nobody was actively trying to get her in trouble. She might have a quiet word with Nolan later, though, just to make sure he wasn’t going to be careless with his information. “It was just that one time,” Myffi told Kaye dismissively. “I brought them into school with me,” she said quietly, to not be overheard, “I didn’t even know I was going to be Head Girl, so I do kinda feel bad about that. I mean, it’s not like I go around giving alcohol to students, except Marissa, and I only offered marijuana to Leo and Nolan.” She was aware she probably sounded defensive, but honestly she wasn’t trying to start anything … there were just some coincidentally incriminating circumstances.

“It hardly counts as a secret society of illicit substances,” she said, swallowing another mouthful of breakfast juice, “but I guess you’re already a member.” That had honestly never been her intention, but Ruben obviously had needed to show off his booze to his girlfriend. “Nobody else knows about the booze, and I honestly don’t plan on bringing in more brownies.” There was a difference between bringing them once to school before knowing she was Head Girl, and requesting more be sent when she already held that position. Besides, what if the school checked mail? She’d have to get the package sent to Pearl Street or something and then bring it down in the lift from the bookshop… and okay, she was stopping that train of thought right there.

Again, Kaye swore near her, but this time Myfanwy noticed that Kaye wasn’t swearing at her, exactly. Just in her presence. That was somehow less offensive than having her yearmate swear at her... more
