It wasn’t that Dade believed Drew when he said that Claudia wasn’t going to try to attack anyone, but he did believe that Claudia had said that to Drew. It wasn’t as good as her actually going away forever but it was still something. It meant that Claudia didn’t want to be on Drew’s bad side. Maybe that was the lie she had told Remington too, to get Dade’s former friend on her side. Even though it was absolutely just a plan to lure Dade into a false sense of security, it did mean that Claudia was going to be sneaky the next time she attacked. That made Dade feel slightly more secure in doing things like leaving the Cetus common room. It wasn’t like he was going to be entirely careless, but it did give him a little bit of space to plan his defense. To the library it was.

He hadn’t been to the library since Remington had cornered him at the beginning of the year, so Dade was particularly careful to pick a spot with several escape points. He put Tripping Jinxes down across all the escape points, too, just to be sure. All he had to do was remember that they were there, and then he would be able to jump over them while the person who was pursuing him got tangled up in their own feet, giving him time to escape. And maybe Claudia wasn’t going to come after him directly - after all, he would be able to prove that easily. She was probably going to do something more indirect, like poisoning his food. Something harder to prove, so that Drew and Remington would keep believing her and not Dade. Well, he’d show her.

That was how Dade ended up with his nose in a potions book. He wasn’t great at Potions but he wasn’t bad at it, and regardless, it would be easier to make a potion that would detect poison than it would be to learn a spell for it. It was easier to surreptitiously put a drop of potion on something than it was to surreptitiously cast a spell on everything he ate. If Claudia knew he was on to her, she would probably change tactics and Dade wasn’t sure what came after poisoning. Maybe cursing him with some sort of magical artifact? The Dubois family was rich and important. Claudia probably had access to all sorts of cursed things, if she wanted it. No, he would prevent her from figuring it out as long as possible.

Then he heard the noise and he froze. It was muffled, so maybe from one or two bookshelves over? But it was definitely his name. Not his normal name, the name Jenna had helped him pick out. The name that only Drew, Anssi, and Kit knew about. It definitely wasn’t those people talking, either - it was Claudia. It was definitely Claudia. He couldn’t tell what else she was saying, but he could hear his name very clearly. And he was one hundred percent sure that it was Claudia. He scrambled to his feet and shoved the book he had been reading back onto the shelf, not paying attention to if it was going in the proper place or not. Carefully and quietly, Dade stepped over the tripping jinx. The voices moved closer. He still couldn’t hear clearly, but his name - it was his name again.

Dade ran out of the library, ignoring the voice of the librarian behind him. He ran to the Finer Diner. It was almost dinnertime, so Dade thought that it would probably be at least a little populated. If Claudia was being sneaky, she wasn’t going to follow him and hex him here, not in front of other people and definitely not in front of teachers. Dade wasn’t sure how it worked, but he was 99% certain that if you already got an entire half-term’s worth of detentions for hexing someone, you were going to be in even more trouble if you did it again.

Trying to be casual, Dade sat down at a table that was occupied by another person, double-checking to make sure it wasn’t Connor, Remington or Claudia. He hadn’t entirely ruled out the idea that Claudia’s appearance in the library had been intended to flush him out into the open. Or maybe she had already planned to poison his food? Dade looked suspiciously at the roasted vegetables, chicken, and rolls that were set out on this table. Then he looked at the person across from him, noticing that they already had food on their plate.

“How’s dinner?” he asked, trying to be as smooth as possible so it didn’t seem like a weird question. There was no way Claudia could poison just his food, he was pretty sure. She would have to poison all the food at the table - so if the other people at the table took a bite and didn’t get sick, Dade would know that the food was safe. All he had to do was make sure they ate some first.
