Naturally, the boy didn’t know what they were studying, either. She glanced at the textbooks. There was one about Defense Against the Dark Arts. That might have something helpful inside. She got the feeling that when it came to puzzles or problem solving, she could trust her instincts. Her instincts were telling her that this could be reversed somehow. And if she was in a course about defending oneself against dark arts, it was safe to assume that the Dark Arts were Dangerous. Perhaps they were suffering from some dark arts related ailment. The book could possibly have a… what? Counter? Retaliation? Shield? Even if she could find the right thing to help within the pages, she wasn’t sure she’d know how to use the information.

She also had information on Magical Science and Cultural Studies. No help there, probably. The last couple of books inside were romances. One seemed to be pretty tame, but the other, which had been buried deep inside of her backpack, had such a racy cover on it that she immediately had dropped it back inside. It was the weirdest staring contest she could imagine. It was like he was goading her, trying to get her to say or do something specific, but she didn’t have the script. And she certainly couldn’t call out line and hope someone would chime in with the correct response.

“I don’t know,” she answered, and she noticed that her voice came out much shyer than she’d expected. “Is there something you think we should be studying? Or that you want?” He was so close that his breath tickled her skin. Had they blinked yet? What was going on? This had to be some kind of flirting, and it was something she clearly had zero experience in. She didn’t know if she wanted to participate. She would much rather figure out the problem here. “It sounds like you have some ideas, at least.”

  • " I don’t know what we were studying, though. " The boy chewed on his lip for a moment and let his eyebrows twitch once more before leaning back in his seat and shaking his hand through his shaggy... more
