The other person at the table was someone Dakota hadnít met before, but she had seen him around, so she figured the kid in front of her was a transfer. Dadeís older sister had a problem with transfers, but he hadnít found that he minded them very much. They couldnít be more annoying than the current first years, several of whom made Kit look like desirable company. There was this one kid who was sticky, like some sort of jelly slug, and another one that liked to wear the sort of clothing that he had never seen an eleven-year-old wear before. Then of course, there was the infamous Elliot Phippen, of Kit-acclaim. She was glad that Kit had made up with Darlene because it made Drew less grumpy, but Dade also wasnít sure how he felt about a new Kit-vendetta. When it was just a problem with Darlene, Dade was sure she could just tune it out when Kit went on rants, but now that the younger girl had picked a new target, Dade wasnít sure how he felt. Was it just going to be Kitís thing, to have an arch-nemesis all the time?

...yeah when he phrased it like that, Dakota realized that was likely the foreseeable future. Maybe one day Kit would turn into a real person, but so far even having a boyfriend hadnít managed to calm that little ball of chaos down.

Anyway this kid was new and he answered the question about dinner with a comment about how it was bland, which Dakota took to mean that he had already tasted the food. Given that DJ didnít seem to be suffering from any particular ailment, deadly or not, Dade was about to introduce herself when two things occurred to her. First, that she had been about to introduce herself when she realized that she didnít know how to introduce herself, and that her first inclination had been to say Dakota. The other thing was that DJ was holding what appeared to be a trashy gossip magazine, with ridiculously large yellow writing practically screaming about some guy named Riley Finn and how he was gay. Initially Dakota had dismissed it because he didnít really care about celebrities, particularly American ones, but two and two had clicked in her head and become four. ĎFinní wasnít the most common of last names, and it couldnít be coincidence that DJ was reading a gossip rag about some guy who shared his last name.

So this kid was clearly gay-friendly, which didnít always mean trans-friendly (according to one of Jennaís more well-used rants) but it was still promising. That decided it for Dade and she smiled at DJ, thoughts of her own murderous arch-nemesis temporarily derailed.

ďIím Dakota,Ē he said. ďIs that your dad?Ē she gestured to the magazine and helped herself to a roll, which she only examined skeptically for a moment before taking a bite out of. It didnít taste like it had been poisoned, although it was as bland as DJ had promised. Dade wasnít the biggest fan of overwhelmingly spicy food, but he did like things that tasted of something other than low-fat cardboard, unlike Connor. He had tried to be more like Connor when he was younger, but now that she was growing up she was less and less interested in being like him and more and more aware of how horrible he actually was.

It was Dakotaís hope that whenever Connor decided to take Drewís advice about asking a girl out, she would be there. From what Drew had said, it was going to be hilarious. He couldnít imagine what Connor would look like performing a rap, or what kind of rap Connor would write and perform, but it was probably going be positively abysmal and Dakota wanted to be there to see that. If Dade were going to ask anyone for girl advice it would be Drew, but she was pretty sure she didnít want girl advice. Plus if she did - well, there was some information about Madeleine that sheíd been trying to forget.
