It's a complex flavor

When DJ initially suggested that Dade go to the nurse or the counselor, his temper flared. Of course he didn’t want to go to the nurse or the counselor. How would that help with Claudia following him everywhere? Then DJ suggested that he could walk Dakota to her house when they were done eating, and the Cetus stopped being as angry. He was still a little bit miffed that DJ had first suggested the counselor, but she could see why someone brand new to the school might think the counselor wasn’t on Claudia’s side. Well that was probably going a little far, but Mr. Tennant definitely wasn’t on Dade’s side when it came to this fiasco. Professor McKindy kind of was, but so Dakota guessed that was why Mr. Tennant kind of was, but for the most part the staff just wasn’t aware enough of what was going on. If they were, Dade wouldn’t have had any problems with Claudia because she would have been expelled or transferred to another school or given so much detention she didn’t have time for anything but that and class. No time for stalking Dakota or being evil with Connor.

But it seemed like DJ believed her about Claudia following her around, which was more than Dakota could reasonably say about Drew, who lately seemed mostly like he was trying to calm Dade down when she talked about Claudia, rather than agreeing that Claudia was ultimately incredibly evil. Dakota knew better than to talk about how Remington was evil now too, because Drew was still friends with Remington. Even though Drew knew what she had turned to the Dark side with Claudia. But Drew was super nice, so he probably thought that he could turn Remington back to Dade’s side, even though Dade herself knew that was unlikely.

“She’s in my House,” Dakota said glumly, looking down at her plate. Then he looked up with a shy smile. “But I would feel better if you walked me to Cetus, after we’re done. The counselor didn’t do anything when that girl tried to attack me last year, and I don’t think Medic Rock would help.” At least that way if they ran into Remington, Dakota wouldn’t be alone. “What House are you in?” he asked, curiously. He was pretty sure that DJ wasn’t in Cetus because he hadn’t seen him in the boys’ dorm, but Dakota was also increasingly anxious about going into the dorm because he suspected that it was only a matter of time before the stairs stopped letting him up. It didn’t seem like they were acting up more than they had been before Midterm, before Jenna and Holland had helped Dakota decide to start socially transitioning, but she was more and more aware of it when it did happen.

There was also still the idea of medical transition which seemed very appealing whenever Dakota thought about it, but when she and Rose had looked into it, it had seemed overwhelmingly expensive even with the sliding scale medic that Holland had recommended. There was a queer youth hangout on Pearl Street that Dakota had heard Natalia Carboni explain animatedly to Harriet, the new Prefect in Cetus. Dakota didn’t particularly like Harriet, who seemed a little too attached to rules and who had initially made a lot of suspicious comments about the whole thing with the staircases. Natalia was weird but okay. She kept offering to read tarot for Dakota, which Dakota personally felt was a waste of time and tried to wiggle out of at every possible opportunity. The one time Natalia had done her tarot thing, it had come out suspiciously in favor of peace and nonviolence. Given that Natalia had been patently disapproving when she found out about Dakota accidentally setting the hallway on fire, she had her suspicions about where precisely the fourth year’s “foretelling” was coming from.
