There is was again: that goofy smirk that was trying to slip off one side of his face. Gigi thought lover boy’s smile might be the single most annoying thing about him, and wow it had so much competition. Far from being flustered by her victory, or even clutching at straws to make yet another infantile remark about fictional soulmates - Gigi was increasingly sure Elliot was bullshitting on the spot by this point - he just smirked at her and said, “It’ll be the same as if my soulmate’s a girl, except that we’re gonna have to make sure we don’t wear the same suit to our wedding.”

She chewed and swallowed a mouthful of sweet potato as she stared at him. She ran the sentence through a couple of times in her head, and he was definitely saying that it would make no difference to him if he married a girl or a boy. Or, a woman or a man, as was more accurate. As usual when she talked to the tech nerd, Georgina had no idea whether the little twerp was being real with her or talking out of his arse. In the first case, what the pineapple? What sort of massively backwards city was New York that its eleven year olds thought marrying a guy was the same as marrying a girl? In the second case, Gigi wasn’t sure whether she wanted to play along or call his bluff. She didn’t like not being in control of the conversation. Damn this Phippen.

“I doubt a nerd like you has seen much action,” she settled on insulting him as a reliable fall back. “So tell me how you even know what you’re into when you’ve got the same sexual experience as this sweet potato.” She sucked the chip clean of bolognese sauce. “Or maybe less,” she mused before popping the morsel into her mouth.

Maybe lover boy - how accidentally perfect was this nickname now? - was bluffing, or maybe he was genuine. Either way, Gigi was a thousand percent going to tell Sadie that it was absolute fact Eliot was batting for both teams. He hadn’t told her to keep the news to herself, which meant it was fair game. “I mean, you clearly think very highly of yourself,” she added conversationally, “but dating yourself is probably not possible. At least I hope you’re one of a kind because, I swear to Merlin, one of you is more than enough.”
