Georgina was equal parts surprised and unsurprised that Elliot would tell her his crushes, if he had them. The mismatched pair were sort of friends, she guessed. They hung out a lot, and it was fun when they did, but then they did spend most of that time arguing. She’d rather argue with someone she liked than talk civilly with someone she didn’t, any day. If she had a crush she would probably tell Elliot. He’d probably tease her and insult her and then go right to her crush with the news, but that’s sort of how Aquilas functioned, as far as Gigi could tell. She got these people.

Maybe Elliot was just covering a crush that he did not want to talk about by saying one didn’t exist, but Gigi was getting the feeling that - today, anyway - Elliot was being straight with her. Or, no, that was clearly the wrong expression given the circumstances. He wasn’t spewing lies every time he opened his mouth, anyway. If he was, he was a master deceiver, and Gigi wanted to learn from him.

Elliot was clearly open to hearing Gigi’s opinions on their peers, as he leaned in like she did, both of them grinning over the dish of spaghetti like human counterparts of Lady and the Tramp. She really wished she had more to tell. “I don’t have any crushes at school,” she said, shaking her head a little for emphasis, her expression apologetic. It would have been juicy to swap notes. “There’s someone at home, he’s called Luke, gorgeous dark auburn hair, very fit, but he’s a couple of years older, so I’m shit outta luck.” She shrugged, resigned to this truth. “I should definitely stop kissing his brother,” she said to the spaghetti with a frown before picking up one strand of pasta between her fingers and sucking it up all the way.

“At school, I don’t know, I haven’t really latched onto anyone yet,” she carried on this conversation because it was more fun than anything else they’d been talking about so far. Besides she really wanted to know more about Elliot fancying dudes. “A couple of the older boys make a good view, but again, older,” she lamented. “I don’t know. I think Joey could be fun, he’s kind of cute, but his aunt is horrifying. I don’t really want to fool around with staff spawn, or even close relatives. That sounds like asking for trouble.”

She was still getting to know most of her classmates. If anyone had immediately stood out as snoggable then Gigi would already have been there and done that. It was depressing that her year seemed to be full of nerds and the year above populated with weirdos. Instead of options for encounters, there were some people she would outright turn down, and others about whom she had no strong opinion either way. Like Elliot, she supposed. Sure, most of the time she wanted to slap him, but if he ever expressed any interest she probably wouldn’t send him packing without a sample. Not that she expected that to happen - she was pretty sure the argumentative ambivalence was mutual.

Elliot’s comment about Joey made Gigi laugh. Not just a snort or a huff or a chuckle, but a proper, gleeful cackle of sheer joy. “Yeah,” she agreed in a voice pitched high with mirth, “The first time ... more
