But I'm always a step ahead of you

Marley was surprised at how short her friend’s list of classes was. How was Claudia only taking five? She was literally the smartest girl in their year, and probably smartest out of the year above, too, so surely she could take any courses she wanted. Her surprise was only temporary, though, as her brain looped back around to focus on Arithmancy. Professor Z had done a sort of general introduction for their first Divinations lesson and she’d mentioned Arithmancy - it was the other class that she taught at RMI, and also related to Divinations. It was cool to think that numbers and fancy math was a way of predicting (or actually telling) the future. Marley had thought it sounded boring before, so she hadn’t signed up for it, but maybe if they did a sampler Arithmancy unit later on and she really enjoyed it, she’d try to get into that class instead. Maybe. There were a lot of other divining methods that Professor Z had touched on, like tea leaves and candle smoke and grain patterns in special types of rocks, and she wouldn’t want to focus on Arithmancy if it meant giving up the chance to learn all of those!

Wait - Claudia was thinking about joining the Dueling Club? Woah. Really? Marley hadn’t expected that; somehow, it was an even bigger surprise than realizing that she was taking more classes than Claudia. The other girl had never seemed interested in dueling before. She hadn’t even seemed very interested in Quidditch, and that was, like, an even less serious game than wizard duels. And there were some really good duelers in the club. Marley had stood in the doorway once in second year, just to watch for a little bit, and Connor’s ugh his way cooler big sister had thrown a giant rock at Ruben and Ruben had been crazy and laughed. She couldn’t imagine Claudia being in the middle of that. Had something changed to make her friend feel like she needed to learn how to duel with all the older kids? Claudia hadn’t said anything to her about this until now...

Entirely at random, the thought suddenly occurred to her that Claudia could have told her about all of this way sooner. Not just since they got to RMI, either. The Dubois family were rich Purebloods; they definitely had their own owls which Claudia could’ve used if she didn’t trust Mister Sprockets to deliver her letters safely.

That was an squirmish, unwanted thought.

Despite her confusions or reservations or whatever, “Of course!” was her immediate response to Claudia’s invitation. Then, quite uncharacteristically, even catching herself by surprise a little, she paused to think it over. On one hand, it was rare for Claudia to invite her along to things. Not that she’d ever been, like, unwelcoming, at least not since first year when her attitude had been super hesitant, but Marley was very aware that ‘events-and-hangouts-initiator’ was her role. For Claudia to initiate was a Big Deal, and she wanted to support her.

But… “Actually,” she amended, already feeling guilty at having to go back on her word (that never happened!), “I don’t know if I’ll be able to. I’m on the Quidditch team again and I wanna sign up for the musical too, and you already know how many classes I’m taking. There’s barely gonna be enough time for all of that. And, like, I’m not taking Defense, you know? What would I even do in Dueling Club?” Marley sighed heavily. She wasn’t interested in the combative part of magic - well, outside of being a Beater - and that was why she hadn’t bothered to continue on with Defense Against the Dark Arts. Dueling just didn’t seem as important to learn as, like, other types of spells, or future-telling, or even history.

“I’m really sorry,” she continued earnestly. “I’d love to do something with you. I miss you.” Wow, she hadn’t properly realized it until pop! it just slipped right out of her mouth. And now that she was thinking about it, Marley realized it was soooo true. She’d had a lot going on over the summer, and maybe that had helped her forget that Claudia hadn’t written back ever, but it had been ages since term started back up and this was their first real conversation and how?? “But it doesn’t have to be at a club or something, we can meet up any time!Outside of classes, obviously.” On impulse, Marley shut her binder, stood up, and stuck out her hand. “C’mon, Claudia. Let’s do something spontaneous. Let’s... get ice cream!” she proposed with a grin. “I got a really yummy one when I went with Teal last term, it was like, rainbow sorbet that actually changed colours and flavours, and I can’t afford to buy it from Pearl Street now but I’m sure the house-elves can make us some.”
