In the wrong direction

Claudia’s relief that Marley would accompany her to duelling club was short-lived, because only a moment later Marley changed her answer. Claudia would not be surprised if she physically drooped, because emotionally she felt she deflated as Marley explained she was too busy. It was probably a very valid reason not to attend, but as she felt disappointed - doubly so because at first Marley had agreed to come - Claudia could only perceive that Marley was too busy to spend time with her. No wonder she hadn’t noticed that Claudia had been reluctant to keep her company last term, and silent over the summer.

Then Marley said she was sorry, and that she missed her, and Claudia felt like she was going to cry. She dug her nails very firmly into both palms and took as deep a breath as she could without it being perceptible. She missed Marley, too. Why did she have to agree to go on a date with Teal in the first place? It had ruined everything.

Suddenly Marley stood, and suggested they be spontaneous. Claudia wasn’t sure spontaneity was really her thing. She liked to consider the various options and their benefits and drawbacks, and not rashly jump into any given scenario (the opposite could probably be said of Marley, yet it hadn’t presented a problem in their friendship before now, as far as she could recall). Neither was Claudia especially comfortable with being physical with people. She looked dubiously at Marley’s outstretched hand. Since she’d been too old to hold the hands of her family members, the only person whose hand Claudia had held was Connor.

Spectacular, now she was sad again. Emotions were inconvenient; they caused a person to make terrible decisions, Claudia decided as she closed the book in front of her and placed it on the top of the small pile, preparing to accompany Marley for ice cream. Then she aborted her actions at the mention of Teal. Again. It was no use pretending that the whole debacle didn’t make Claudia very uncomfortable. She looked up at Marley, meeting her gaze. As much as she didn’t want to discuss the matter, there was one question that definitely needed an answer before Claudia contemplated going anywhere with Marley. Still seated, speaking levely and clearly, Claudia asked, “Are you still going on dates with Teal?”
