Never give up, never surrender

Well, so much for talking about crushes. Drew had a bunch of friends, but he couldn’t really talk to any of them about this. If he tried to talk to Kit about Darlene, she just called her a speciesist and then stuck her fingers in her ears and sang “Darlene is terrible” to the tune of “London Bridge” until he stopped, so Drew didn’t try to do that much anymore. Dade was kind of like Aaron—he didn’t like talking about feelings and stuff—so Drew didn’t because he didn’t like making anyone feel uncomfortable. Only that kind of sucked because Dade was Drew’s only close guy friend.

Unless he wasn’t. Over midterm Drew had asked Marissa about gender, because she was friends with Holland so she probably knew stuff about being non-binary. He had asked if someone could be a boy or a girl sometimes but not all the time, and Marissa had said probably but she didn’t know for sure, and that Holland could explain it better and they would be happy to talk to him if he had more questions. Only Drew didn’t really want to talk to Holland about gender stuff. Sure they’d been friends with Marissa for years, but they weren’t friends with Drew, and he didn’t want them to know he was asking for Dade because that was rude, like maybe outing someone, and he didn’t really want them to think was asking for himself either. He’d told Marissa he was just thinking about it because of the staircases thing and Maverick, which was true, and he was pretty sure she believed it. The key to getting away with not telling someone everything was to make them feel like you’d answered all of their questions.

Anyway maybe he could ask Remington for advice about Darlene and Valentine’s Day. An idea that wasn’t about flying carpets was sort of starting to take shape in his head, but he wanted to check with someone to make sure it didn’t sound dumb.

It was nice of Satveer to suggest a song for his mixtape anyway. Drew didn’t know the specific song off the top of his head, but he was familiar with Vivaldi. He liked classical music (he liked all music) and he liked it when people gave classical songs contemporary arrangements. That was the cool thing about hearing live performances and cover groups and stuff like that. Because every musician gave their own interpretation of a song that made it different from how anyone else in the world would play or sing it.

And Satveer had also given Drew an idea, even if he didn’t have that specific song to use. Drew had mostly been picking songs with lyrics, but maybe he should be thinking about instrumental songs too. The words of a song weren’t the only ways to communicate feelings. He should think about songs that were musically like how Darlene made him feel. There was some Dvorák that might work, maybe, one of the symphonies with a string section that made you feel like you had just stumbled upon something tremendously beautiful.

“Thanks. I’ll see if I can find it,” he said, meaning it. If Satveer was music, he’d have a lot of syncopated beats and a timpani, and maybe something non-Western like a sitar. “Do you listen to a lot of classical music? Or other genres? Any favorite artists?” Drew was currently wearing a t-shirt from the latest tour of Grilled Cheese and Thunderstorm, one of his favorites. He was pretty sure they were only big in America, though.

Drew’s noncommittal “maybe” was potentially the out Satveer needed. If he didn't have the audience, then he didn't need to plan it. Placing the Kit issue to one side, the logistics of such an event,... more

      • Satveer was very fond of music, so much so that his initial reaction to Drew’s question was to grin. “I like alot of music” he paused, realising his sentence needed clarification. “Or at least, I... more
