Despite her own discomfort, Claudia was able to recognize that Caleb, too, no longer looked so confident. She had objectively turned him down for a date, which was a premise anecdotally associated with disappointment, but the fourth year did not perceive that her alleged admirer had put forth a great amount of effort into securing the arrangement. Indeed he’d done several things that practically prevented it from occurring. His apology was unexpected but welcome nevertheless, and Claudia did feel some pity for him: Caleb was, by her judgment, an amiable person who had simply made some gross misjudgments.

He stood to leave, and Claudia felt a twinge of regret. She hadn’t meant to upset him, the same as he proclaimed he had not mean to cause her disrespect. She would not have minded the continuation of his company, even though she did have the assignment to complete. He took Spellwork classes, too, they might have been able to corroborate ideas. Yet the fifth year was standing, his decision to leave had clearly already been made, and Claudia would not damage his pride further by attempting to dissuade him.

He next made a strange request, that she not tell the others (she presumed he meant Connor and Nolan), and to pretend it had never happened. Claudia did not know how she would act normally around Caleb now, and if pressed for details she could hardly conceal them without appearing obnoxious, but she could not very well deny the request based on assumption. “I won’t tell,” Claudia said, feeling dreadful about how the short conversation had concluded, which was unnecessary, as it was hardly her fault, but she did not seem to be able to prevent it. Before he left, Claudia stipulated, “Caleb, I do like spending time with you. I’m just not certain that right now is the time for me to be alone with people I don’t know very well.” It was as honest an answer as she could provide without making insinuations about his character that both of them might live to regret.

The smile on his face faltered in an instant. He sighed and took a deep breath. He wasn't annoyed with Claudia, he was annoyed with himself. Caleb was nervous, really nervous and everything that had... more
