So far RMI had been better than Gigi had expected. She’d ended up with a roommate but Vi was pretty cool, if kind of annoying. The Aquilas’ main point of contention so far had been Georgina’s pet ferret. Apparently Vi did not want to share her room with vermin, no matter how adorable, but the poor kid did not have a say in the matter. As Gigi had said, “Tough shit, Vi. Lady Godiva is Queen of your quarters. Suck it up.” No way was she getting rid of the best birthday present her parents had ever given her, also her first pet of her own, also her only actual friend at school so far. No thanks, not gonna happen.

Whatever, Vi was okay, Gigi didn’t hate sharing a room with her so that was a bonus. Other kids she’d spoken to so far seemed more or less tolerable, and none of the professors had totally alienated her yet, either. The food was epic. The only thing RMI didn’t have was her friends from back home, and when Gigi had made her own friends over here in Colorado that would be a non-problem, but right now she - ugh - missed having them around. In-jokes, ‘remember when?’s and idle gossip were some of Gigi’s favourite conversations, so it sucked that she couldn’t have them with anyone here yet. No big deal, she could catch up with Liam and Karinder at Christmas and that would be fine.

Then it had occurred to Gigi in one of those cultural classes that the library had a computer lab or something, so she could maybe send a cheeky e-mail to her co-conspirators back home. The next morning she’d tugged a pair of black lycra cycling shorts on beneath a black tennis dress with fuchsia pink stripes down each side and the top two buttons left undone. Her knee-high socks were pink and black striped, her converse scuffed, and her dark brown curls left to do their own thing. Swinging her satchel over her shoulder, Georgina went to the library to investigate the internet situation.

Some of the machines there were older than her, and others were older than Old Man Time himself. Her e-mail optimism had dwindled, and was distinguished completely when a voice said, “What’s the point of having computers if you can’t even go on the internet?”

The speaker was one of the excitable nerds in her House. One was Grayson, the other was Elliot, but Gigi hadn’t figured out yet which was which. This was the cuter one. Gigi sighed dramatically at his announcement. “No internet? Are you shitting me? If the food weren’t so godamn good I’d swear this was some obscure punishment program for wayward preteens.”

  • Anyone know the wifi password? - Elliot Phippen, Mon Jul 23 14:27
Elliot never had his own cell phone, but the eleven-year-old had a tablet at home, and his 3DS. Because Dad worked in the gaming industry, the Phippens had accumulated way more technology than they... more

      • Huh? - Elliot, Tue Jul 24 18:36
Elliot laughed at the answer, which came from one of his fellow Aquila first years—the one who never wore robes. G-something. “Right? Like I know that wizards have the whole old-timey medieval... more
        • Are you always this articulate? - Georgina, Wed Jul 25 15:41
The nerd laughed, which was a good sign, because sometimes people could get tiresomely uptight when Gigi swore in front of them, and she swore a lot. The nerd went on to wax lyrical about the lack of ... more
          • Only on days that end in y - Elliot, Thu Jul 26 05:22
Elliot was confused. He was pretty sure that he had complained about the lack of internet, and then his Housemate had said that not having the internet sucks, and Elliot had agreed with her , and... more
            • I’ll use short words from now on - Gigi, Thu Jul 26 07:13
Ugh, she was right, the nerd had taken her comment as an invitation for discussion and Gigi was so uninterested. Yes, it would help her right now to be able to send an e-mail, but she was just fine... more
              • My overworked brain thanks you - Elliot, Thu Jul 26 11:06
Elliot shrugged. “So do I. Doesn’t mean they’re the best at what they’re for.” Again, wizards had the whole magical aesthetic thing down . They definitely went for form over function. Quills might be ... more
                • You are now indebted to me - Gigi, Sat Jul 28 16:01
Gigi grinned. Maybe the nerd was only swearing so openly because she already had, but Elliot didn’t sound like the foul language spewing from his mouth was unpractised. Her own mother used swear... more
                  • How can I repay you? - Elliot, Tue Jul 31 14:23
Elliot nodded. It wasn’t hard to imagine spending that much time with his parents. His mother being nocturnal-ish meant that she was home during the day, so before Elliot had started school, it was... more
                    • I'm saving it for a rainy day - Gigi, Tue Jul 31 15:11
Aunt, right, that made sense. Same last name, lots of hugging. Georgina mentally filed away that tidbit for future reference. Tycho was now the sticky kid, and sorry, sweetheart, but there’s nothing... more
                      • Guess I’ll just stay in the red - Elliot, Tue Jul 31 16:06
Elliot could not keep the grin off his face as Gigi gaped at him. He always liked telling people what his parents did. The fact that his dad made video games for a living probably wouldn’t be as... more
                        • Suits me - Gigi, Thu Aug 2 15:20
Peregrine . That was a sort of bird, right? Georgina was mentally storing and cataloguing much of what Elliot was telling her. He liked flying and video games, which his Dad literally played with for ... more
                          • But not me! - Elliot, Wed Aug 8 22:29
Gaming was the only time Elliot could stand to sit still for hours and hours and hours (besides sleeping, but even then, he didn’t sleep a lot, usually going to bed late and getting up early) Elliot... more
                            • Sucks to be you - Gigi, Tue Aug 14 08:31
Cool, the tech nerd wanted to play Seeker. Not strictly within the stereotype of sitting every day for hours in front of a screen, but as they had already established, that wasn’t really so much of... more
