Guess I’ll just stay in the red

Elliot could not keep the grin off his face as Gigi gaped at him. He always liked telling people what his parents did. The fact that his dad made video games for a living probably wouldn’t be as impressive at RMI, but Elliot’s Muggle friends thought it was cool. When you were an elementary schooler, writing and designing and testing video games was the number three dream job, behind ‘literal astronaut’ and ‘secret agent.’ But Elliot would rather his dad not be an astronaut or a secret agent because then he wouldn’t be home much, and that would suck. Also, astronauts and secret agents didn’t get advance copies of new games and special edition consoles for free. Peregrine was the coolest place ever, though, and you didn’t have to be a Muggle or have Muggle friends to get that. Nightclubs were universally awesome.

He wondered what Gigi’s parents had done that made her wish she was someone else’s kid a lot. Elliot couldn’t remember a time he had felt like that, even when he was mad at his parents (which didn’t happen often). Was it weird to like your parents? If it was then Elliot didn’t want to know what not being weird was like.

“It is very glamourous,” he agreed, teasing. “But besides going to Peregrine—that’s the club—my hobbies are flying and playing video games. My dad is a game developer so we have, like, pretty much every game that’s been published in the last… forever.” Gigi didn’t seem like she would be very impressed by that, but even if her parents were magical, she had Muggle friends so maybe she knew about video games? Or at the very least she’d already called him a tech nerd so this probably shouldn’t surprise her.

So what, they don’t have a decent magic school back there?

Elliot didn’t think there was a magical school in NYC (the city was already so full of other stuff. Where would you even put it?) but as he considered the question he realized he had no idea. There had never been any question of the Phippen kids going to a school besides Rocky Mountain International. “I don’t know,” he answered. “My mom,” and Aunt Chris and Uncle Logan and Uncle Norbert, “went here, and so did Tycho and Sadie’s moms, and both their stepdads. So I guess our parents just picked RMI ‘cause they’re alumni.” Then it occurred to him that Gigi was British and there was definitely a famous school of witchcraft and wizardry there. “Doesn’t the U.K. have its own magic school? How come you’re here?”

Aunt, right, that made sense. Same last name, lots of hugging. Georgina mentally filed away that tidbit for future reference. Tycho was now the sticky kid, and sorry, sweetheart, but there’s nothing... more

Gaming was the only time Elliot could stand to sit still for hours and hours and hours (besides sleeping, but even then, he didn’t sleep a lot, usually going to bed late and getting up early) Elliot... more

Cool, the tech nerd wanted to play Seeker. Not strictly within the stereotype of sitting every day for hours in front of a screen, but as they had already established, that wasn’t really so much of... more
