Is that something to be proud of?

Dade did not hex Remington.

It was very close. Remington had her wand out and the words were on the tip of Dade’s tongue when he realized that she was pointing the wand at the book she had clearly just dropped on herself. It didn’t stop his heart from going faster than a racing broom, but it did prevent him from hexing her. For the moment. He kept a wary hand close to his wand because Remington still had hers out. Looking around, Dade couldn’t see a real reason for her to have a wand out other than the book. Was she luring him into a false sense of security? Was Claudia about to appear behind him? Would they both hex him then? But so far she hadn’t hexed him, and he hadn’t hexed her.

The thing that actually made him relax a little bit was when he realised that there was no way, in any possible reality, that Remington would do anything to hurt the library. She was way too much of a Draco for that. Dade himself would be hesitant to do something to hurt the library but when it came down to it, he wasn’t nearly as protective of it as Remington was. So as long as he was in the library and surrounded by books, Dade figured that he was probably as safe as he could get. From Remington, at least - Claudia was still likely to appear at any minute.

“Hey,” he greeted Remington with a careful smile. So far this was going fine. Maybe Drew was right? It felt like there were a million eyes burning into the back of Dade’s head, like he was being watched. He probably was being watched. He had to get out of the way of the people watching him. Back into the stacks, that would be safe. And now that he was confident that Remington wouldn’t hurt the books near him, that would be a good place to sit anyway. Okay, he could do this. He’d figured it out. Just put Remington between him and the exit so that he could keep an eye on what was behind her, that was it.

Dade walked past Remington as casually as he could, but his body was still stiff and awkward as he bent down to pick up the book. He handed it to her and then slipped back into the stacks they had come from, covering the distance between him and the wall quickly. Once he reached the wall, Dade put his back up against it and then slid into a sitting position. His hand was still near his wand, just in case, but he was feeling more relaxed about this plan so far. Now would be a good time to see if Drew was right about Remington being a spy for them. So far, Remington hadn’t told him anything - but he hadn’t talked to her.

“What have you found out?” Dade asked. “Drew explained what you’re doing.” He was keeping it kind of vague on purpose, in case there was someone around them. Oh, of course. Dade moved his wand and muttered the charm that Drew had used during class to keep people from overhearing them. Then it occurred to him that now, nobody would be able to hear him yell for help if Remington did decide to attack him. He felt nervous and sweaty. If Drew wasn’t right….
