How about a pinky swear?

Drew had already decided it was pretty awful that Claudia knew about Dade being trans and had told him, because he was pretty sure that meant he should tell Dade, and he really didn’t want to do that. Drew was hoping that his friend would be less stressed if she was getting to be herself (even a little bit at a time, like she was doing now by telling him and Kit and Anssi), but Claudia knowing would definitely not hope with that.

But there was something more awful than that: watching Remington find out. Even though Drew still had trouble believing that Claudia of all people had figured it out before Remy, seeing how betrayed she looked was like a Bludger to the stomach. He wanted to reassure her and tell her everything and try to explain what was going on with Dade, except he couldn’t because he couldn’t out Dakota, and even if Remy was probably the only person he might make an exception for, Claudia freaking Dubois was right there, so he couldn’t. But watching Remy try to muscle through it made him feel pretty crappy, and a little mad at Dade Dakota for being so weird and paranoia that she wasn’t even trusting Remington. Maybe later he could talk to Remington about it privately and that would somehow help.

For now he had to deal with Claudia, which was not a small job. And hang on, Claudia had said she would only tell his dad if Drew didn’t tell her she was worrying about nothing. It probably wouldn’t be such a bad thing—Dakota had said Madeleine knew, so Dad probably already knew anyway—but that wasn’t how the administration was supposed to find out. It should be Dakota’s choice.

“Wait a sec, I just told you you had nothing to worry about,” he argued, “like you asked. Look, you know we’ve been learning self-defense magic and we know you have too,” some of the spells Claudia had used on Drew during their duel were definitely non-curriculum, “and no one wants to test that, right?” He looked at Remington, hoping to find some agreement. “So if you and Dade can agree to, like, a ceasefire, which is what you both want,” he added pointedly, “then it should be fine. No one gets hexed.”

What Claudia was saying matched up with what Remington had told him at the end of the first day of classes, when she’d gotten back from the pensieves class and he’d gotten back from Defense Against the Dark Arts with Dade. Honestly, it also matched up with what Dade had said—that he just knew Claudia was following him. Both of the primary sources could be true: Dade had thought one thing was happening and Claudia had thought another thing was happening, and they’d both been shocked and upset by what had happened. “And for the record,” he copied Claudia’s phrasing, “I believe you weren’t going to hurt Dade. He just thought you were, and he thought wrong. But if you’re trying to convince people that you don’t have anything against queer people, outing someone you think is trans isn’t a great way to do it.”

Remington’s reaction confirmed Claudia’s suspicions that Dade’s gender identity was news to the Draco. However she was far more interested in how Andrew made no attempt to deny her assumption: this... more

Yet again, Drew was overwhelmingly glad that Remington was there and was a normal human person who could look at what was going on and use normal human logic to figure out what they should do. It... more
