Then I might

Yet again, Drew was overwhelmingly glad that Remington was there and was a normal human person who could look at what was going on and use normal human logic to figure out what they should do. It wasn’t super helpful, big-picture, because by now Drew was pretty sure that no one could convince Dade or Claudia that the other one wasn’t out for blood, but at least Remington being sane meant that Drew didn’t feel like he was going completely crazy for trying to have this whole Claudia/Dade thing not be a big deal.

He couldn’t keep doing this. He couldn’t. It was terrible. Obviously he had to keep doing it and was going to anyway, because Dade was his friend and Dade was the kind of person, like Kit, who needed a PR person to go around fixing stuff, and Drew was pretty good at that. Usually. When pureblood girls weren’t involved. But it sucked.

Drew leaned back in his chair to stare at the ceiling in resigned frustration. “Merlin, Circe, and Agrippa,” he muttered. You’re both idiots, he wanted to say, but didn’t, because he was pretty sure Claudia would get all huffy about it and not listen to the rest of what he had to say. It was like how Kit sometimes got hung up on the smallest, dumbest detail that had nothing to do with the point you were trying to make. He lifted his head so he could look at her. “If you keep refusing to be in the same place as Dade, and Dade keeps refusing to be in the same place as you, then of course you’re never gonna be able to agree to a ceasefire.” They were both so scared of the other person getting hex-happy that they’d do anything to stop it, even if it meant getting hex-happy themselves, and then they were back at square one with the trust thing.

Ughhhhh. They were both so dumb. Drew just wanted to lock them in a room with no wands and semi-permanently Stuck to opposite walls, and not let them go until they’d talked everything out and were cool again. It wasn’t the worst idea, because literally nothing could be worse than how things were right now. This was a big stupid misunderstanding and if anyone besides Drew and Remington put even a little bit of non-crazy thought into it, everything would be fixed. But no. Claudia and Dade wanted to do it the stupid way, so here he was semi-permanently stuck mediating on Dade’s behalf when he didn’t even want to.

Well, he did want to a little. Because he didn’t want his friends to have mortal enemies and get hexed and not be able to walk around the school. Drew didn’t want anyone to feel like that, because RMI was his home, actually and for real, not just ‘essentially.’ He even didn’t want Claudia to feel unsafe, although at this point he really couldn’t tell whether that was because of his charitable goodwill toward humankind or because it would be a heck of a lot more convenient for him.

“Anyway, you’re not taking my word, so why should I take yours? I just said,” he reminded Claudia, “that I believe you’re not going to hurt Dade, so I really don’t know what else you want from me. I already told you you’re not gonna get hexed in your sleep. If you don’t believe me then I guess I can’t do anything about that.” He shrugged and got up from the table, shouldering his bag. He was making about as much progress with Claudia as he had with Dade and he was tired of it. “If you see anyone else who wants to ask me how to fix their problems and then ignore my advice, tell them I’ll be in the theater.”
