Sorry, wrong number

Dade had avoided Rose all holiday, and Connor too for good measure and just in case she’d said anything. He was pretty sure she wouldn’t. Rose might be mad at him, but even when she was mad at Dade she didn’t usually rat him out to people. But then again, the circumstances under which she had been mad at him in the past hadn’t involved - well, that. There were a bunch of reasons she could be mad at him for that and when Rose was mad she didn’t always yell, just usually. Sometimes she got sneaky and mean, so you didn’t notice until it was too late. That usually happened with their father though, or Charlene. Charlene’s mother had learned pretty early on not to cross Rose and they spent a lot of time avoiding each other. And as soon as Dade had arrived back at RMI, he’d bolted off to the Cetus common room, where Rose couldn’t get to him.

Of course, the problem with the Cetus common room was that it was in Cetus, and even though Dade didn’t absolutely hate literally everyone in his House anymore (Drew was okay) (and Connor but Connor didn’t count) he wasn’t particularly keen on spending time with the potential to interact with them. It hadn’t taken him very long to return to his usual habit of skulking in the library, deliberately avoiding the places that he usually ran into his older sister.

That was where he was today. Dade had found the most secluded area of the library and, after gazing around, had decided that it was empty enough that he could sit at a table instead of cloistering himself amidst the shelves themself. He had a giant book on hexes that he was examining, because now that he was back at school it meant he was back at Dueling Club and back within easy reach of Kit Kendrick, who was weirdly entertained when he hexed her. After Remington had worked with Kit in Potions one day and the first year had ended up floating around after licking some ingredients, Dade had been fascinated to see what else he could get Kit to do. And ‘stand still while he hexed her’ was apparently on that list of things. It was great.

He could have checked out the book, but Dade didn’t want anyone to know what he did during his time in the library and he was pretty sure that hauling around a copy of Hellacious Hexes was a pretty big giveaway. Then he heard his name and his head shot up, already pushing himself back from the table and getting ready to bolt. Then he realized it was Holland.

The older boy always looked really cool, and today was no exception. He was wearing a plaid button-down shirt which seemed normal until you looked at it and noticed that there were sequins on it. He also had on makeup and his hair was the color of blue jeans today, which Dade thought made him look more casually cool than he usually did. Holland often had different colored hair, but a lot of the times that Dade spied him in the hallways, his hair was very vibrant. Dade wished he could dye his hair like Holland. Not the super bright colors but maybe a color like he had his hair right now. He swallowed, realizing his throat had gone a little dry.

“Hi Holland,” he said. “My midterm was okay.” No it wasn’t, and he was pretty sure Holland would be able to tell he was lying. “How was your midterm?” Dade asked to distract him.

  • Giving The Talk [Dade] - Holland Keene, Sat Sep 16 12:17
Holland had gotten a letter over the midterm from Rose, which was odd enough in and of itself. Holland was usually in touch with Emmett, Marissa, and Danny over school breaks, but in general their... more
    • Sorry, wrong number - Dade Farnon, Sat Sep 16 18:27
      • Guess I have to redial - Holland, Sat Sep 16 21:38
Encouragingly, Dade seemed like he was in a decent mood. He was usually surly even at the best of times, and he admittedly didn’t sound like someone who had had an okay midterm, but an answer to... more
        • 'Have to' is such a strong phrase - Dade, Mon Sep 18 14:58
Holland answered Dade’s question about midterm with things he only vaguely understood (they’d talked about different types of movies in Cultural Studies but he hadn’t been paying much attention). He... more
          • It’s that or face Rose’s wrath - Holland, Mon Sep 18 15:37
Well, that hadn’t gone very well. And probably Holland should have expected it, because when they were younger they wouldn’t have wanted to talk about this subject like this either. Monty and Bryony... more
            • Holland followed him into the stacks and Dade was furious. He just wanted to be left alone and he wanted everyone to forget what happened over midterm and he wanted everything to be normal but Rose... more
              • So we agree on something - Holland, Mon Sep 18 17:07
Holland had half expected Dade to refuse the nail polish, and been prepared to refuse his refusal, so it was a surprise and a relief when he pocketed it. He was probably going to run away now, and... more
                • Sometimes I'm agreeable - Dade, Thu Sep 21 06:46
Wow Holland said a lot of words. Wow. Dade’s hazel eyes grew very round as Holland explained gender, which was something that Dade had previously been entirely sure did not require any explanation.... more
                  • Once in a blue moon - Holland, Thu Sep 21 16:28
Dade was quiet for a long time. Holland waited. They would’ve preferred to have this conversation sitting down, but the stacks seemed more private, so that was all right. They read the titles of the... more
                    • So Rose thought he might be ‘questioning his gender’ or the way he ‘expressed his gender’. Dade scowled. He didn’t even know what that meant. He had mostly followed along with Holland’s explanation... more
                      • Is it made of blue cheese? - Holland, Fri Sep 29 04:00
Dade was back to looking surly, which Holland supposed shouldn’t surprise them. It seemed to be Rose’s brother’s default attitude. Just like how Rose defaulted to stubbornness, and Connor... more
                        • Blue cheese isn't that blue - Dade, Sat Sep 30 15:48
Well if this was what Rose thought was helpful, Dade didn’t want to see what Rose thought of as unhelpful . The helpful thing would have been to just ignore it and move on (okay, the yelling part had ... more
                          • Maybe the moon is Swiss cheese - Holland, Sat Sep 30 19:19
Holland maintained a practiced composure while Dade got defensive. Ah, shit. Dade might actually be some flavor of gender non-conforming. If he didn’t identify at all with what Holland had said, the... more
                            • I don't think the Swiss are smurfs - Dade, Sat Oct 14 15:21
Nope this was bad. Very bad. Holland kept talking and Dade just felt more and more uncomfortable. He kind of wanted to ask more questions, but he also very much did not want to ask more questions.... more
