Now, who hasn't had a turn yet?

He flinched a bit when the kitten mewed, worried that he had done something wrong. Fortunately, Rumingten laughed at that moment and scooched a chair over to sit down beside him. That was reassuring. If she was laughing, that meant he hadn’t done anything wrong, and he could try to adjust the cat in his hands. That he was trying was of course the main thing, here. Catapult the cat was not at all like a toy cat. She was very warm and squirmy and seemed almost to slide out of his hands, like melting ice cream. “Her meowing is very…” Anssi had to think of the word for a moment. “Cute!” The first-year grinned.

As carefully as he had picked up the cat, he began trying to put her down again, this time in his lap. But then he remembered how fast the kitten had bonked him on the nose and switched to an awkward but also super snuggly position where he was sort of cradling her in his arms. The older girl started describing more about Catapult, which was interesting and he listened quite intently - although he also was being distracted by the little cat as she twisted around and flicked her tail across his face. “Shh, shhh, lillavän” he whispered at the kitten, cuddling the soft pile of fur closer. Oh, cats smelled so nice!

“Yes, very helpful.”

Anssi giggled. And then promptly sneezed as a fuzzy tail flicked past again. “Sorry, sorry!” he apologized to the cat. “I did not mean to be sneezey on you! Do you want a pen? Do cats eat pens? Or pencils, or homework?” he asked Roonington curiously. There was a saying about pet dogs eating homework, though he wasn’t sure if that was completely true. One of his friends back home had a big wolfish dog that sometimes ate juice boxes and the newspaper and probably could eat homework, too, but that was only one dog. “Voi no, I guess not eat, but biting and trying to eat? Here! You can sit on my homework also, if you want to.” Setting the kitten on his lap and releasing it, he picked up the pencil that he had been using and wiggled it off the table.

Catapult the cat started licking him. This came as a huge surprise. It had never even occurred to Anssi that cats might lick people, because that seemed like such a dog thing to do and cats and dogs... more
